[GREN-Exec] Fwd: 100 Debates for the Environment Sept 8 -English debates scheduled

Hi Everyone
I saw that no one has picked up an event for Waterloo. Is that still the
case?
If so, Katie from SWR's team has agreed to see if we can do this. One flag,
our zoom is only for 100 people as well so would need help around that
issue.
Have added Katie to the thread here to look at the next steps and confirm
if we can help pull this last one together for the entire region to be
participating

1) Do we need to set up our own Eventbrite page or can that be done
collectively for people to attend the riding they want?
2) I haven't seen anyone pick up on this from Waterloo. Any ideas who we
could ask to do that? Would really love to get the whole region.
3) I've just sent a message to 100 Debates to add us, which we all need to
do, and they are including links to register.
4) Also, I've added Betsey from Nith Valley EcoBoosters as the contact to
this list.
5) Thank you to everyone for stepping up so quickly on this!
Best,
Susan

Hi all,
I’ve been working on the Cambridge debate with Tim, so I’ll try to provide
a bunch of information here that will hopefully be useful:
1. Tomorrow is a 100 Debate organizer call, focused on the tech and
moderator. There are weekly calls to help organizers plan the next steps,
so someone in this group may want to hop on this call and ask any of the
questions still left unanswered and it might help with people not feeling
confident taking on the tech:
https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_LrNk3XwYQUW8uosSbr2yhw
1. The information I was provided when I asked the Regional Coordinator
if all candidates need to be invited was the following “Technically,
they don't need to be. The 100 Debates guidelines are that all candidates
from official parties must be invited—the requirement is that the party
must have at least 1 seat in parliament. As the PPC holds no seats in
parliament, they do not need to be invited. These guidelines are also
followed in the federal leaders debates. That being said, the riding may
decide if they choose to invite *all-candidates*, not just official
parties. If you choose to go the route of inviting all parties, it will be
important to invite all candidates, even those who are independent or
affiliated with obscure parties.”
1. To connect with the 100 Debates team and sign up officially you can
either do so on the 100 Debates website <https://www.100debates.ca/>, or
connect with Ese directly: 100debates at greenpac.ca. Ese is the 100
Debates Program Manager. I have sent her an email saying there are people
looking to organize for Kitchener Centre & Kitchener-Conestoga if that
still needs done.
1. Once you sign up as an organizer, you’ll get access to templates for
candidate invitations and things. Attached is a template letter in word
document form to use to invite candidates if you want to get started before
getting access to that! I think the one provided on the drive might be a
PDF, so this doc is easier to use. It is recommended that along with the
invitation you send sample questions. Attached are some of the sample
questions that 100 Debates provided for organizers to use this year. I
think all of us organizing debates in the Region should come up with the
rest of the questions and ask consistent questions at all of the debates.
Unlike in 2019 there is a lot more flexibility this year in selecting your
own/audience questions.
Hopefully that helps!
Thanks,
Laura

Hi everyone,
I have confirmed that rare’s webinar option apparently can accommodate up
to 500 people. Also bringing in Jenna into the conversations who has
volunteered to help as we believe there is also a need for an event for
Kitchener Centre, which we feel will be a very important riding this time.
Laura has also told me that apparently we are only obligate to invite the
representatives of the 4 main parties, but we should double check that –
those are the ones who have been invited for the Cambridge event.
I could send out invitations to the politicians. Kevin, would you perhaps
be able to help with the tech end of things the night of the event? I have
never run the webinar function so I’m not sure how complicated it is, and
I’m admittedly not the most tech savvy among us.
Thank you all,

I just checked. I have a Pro Zoom account for the Good Green Death Project,
can host up to 100 people, but the webinar option is an add-on that I don't
have.
Dorothy, can we use the EcoBoosters Zoom account that you use for your
webinars for Kitchener-Conestoga, and is anyone available and tech-savvy in
the group to handle that?

Hello all – Happy to support and develop questions together and work on
this. We can also make an EventBrite page and banner image for the event.
Our Zoom is being used for Cambridge, so another account would be needed –
either Susan or rare’s.
This is the EventBrite page for Cambridge – rare will be sharing soon on
their social media and we will follow:

The attached image can easily be changed for other ridings, like
Kitchener-Conestoga. Just let me know and I can make it happen.
Looking forward to working on this together!
All the best,
Tim

Mine is a paid account, not the free version.

Hi,
I will confirm today, but I do think we need the professional version of
Zoom for this, not the free one – to be able to have a panel and a separate
audience, which I believe requires the webinar function and also the free
version meetings are limited to 45 minutes.

These are the candidates for Kitchener-Conestoga listed on the CBC website:
1. Liberal Tim Louis (incumbent).
2. Conservative Carlene Hawley.
3. Green's Owen Bradley.
4. People's Party candidate Kevin Depuis.
5. Veterans Coalition Party of Canada candidate Matthew Correia.
I have a Zoom account, have hosted Zoom events by invitation, but haven't
done anything that's open to the general public. I'm pretty sure you can
get just get Zoom for a month, so maybe that would be one route to go for
our groups, like GREN, for example, to host an event. If REEP could compile
questions from all of us and what they have already, we would just need to
get invites out to the candidates for Sept 8 for 7 to 9, we could probably
follow the same format we had for live forums where they are each given 2
minutes or so to speak, then each given the opportunity to answer specific
questions which we could provide beforehand, and then have someone
monitoring the chat box for questions from people attending for the last 30
minutes or so. And promote through our collective networks. Need to commit
to this quickly. I'm cottaging Aug 28 to Sept 4, but would hate to see us
miss an opportunity to do this.
If we go this route, Tova, would you be willing to moderate again for
Kitchener-Conestoga? You did such a wonderful job last time! :-)
Should be pretty straightforward to do.

Hi you all,
I'm also in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding - I'm officially going on
vacation for a couple of weeks but could help organizing in my spare
time. I will speak to Laura tomorrow who is organizing the Cambridge
event at rare - perhaps we can piggyback on the model and copy it/
co-promote it for our riding. I'm not sure if both Reep and rare have
a Zoom account with the webinar feature - I know rare does. If yes, we
could probably hold parallel events on Zoom fairly easily assuming one
of us can manage the tech side of it.
Take care,
Stephanie

Hi Susan,
Excellent idea. We need to ensure that climate change and our
environment is front and centre in this election. I have not heard of
anything planned yet but I am currently out of town and a bit out of
the loop.
I too am in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding and can try to help however
possible despite already being pretty swamped.
I like the simplicity/safety of a virtual format. Let’s share any
ideas and see what we can come up with as a community.
Cheers,
Kevin.

Hi Everyone,
Are you aware of anyone who is organizing debates in Waterloo Region
through 100 Debates, as we did last time? If not, are we ready to take
it on for Sept 8? They probably have to be on Zoom, which might make
it easier to organize. I'm prepared to help with one for my riding of
Kitchener-Conestoga. Who's up for this?
