Subject: Election 44: Climate Crisis and a Just Transition
What do governments need to do to create sustainable climate change in Canada? Find out in this week's elections newsletter.
Just Transition Now.
The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report<https://policyalternatives.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50ab80acdbcc30e47a51c061b&id=1b3c8854f7&e=632fdac524> has set off alarm bells as the best case scenarios for mitigating the climate crisis slide increasingly out of reach. The report is yet another indictment of Canada's efforts to reverse climate change: we need to do more now.
Canadians want to do their part in tackling the climate crisis and have made it a top electoral priority. The truth is, no matter how hard we try, as individuals, to reduce our environmental footprint, we can only solve a problem this big when we work together to pressure governments to take action.
Our research<https://policyalternatives.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50ab80acdbcc30e47a51c061b&id=0626e2cc3f&e=632fdac524> shows that, to be effective, progressive climate policy needs to be ambitious in its pursuit of a zero-carbon economy while ensuring a just and fair transition for those communities that rely on the fossil fuel industry. And this is well within our reach!
During this election season, we are hopeful that all political leaders will face the climate crisis head on with bold, proactive policies that rise to the scale of the challenge. Here are a few things that we're looking out for:
1. Fossil fuel phase-out: There is no place for oil, gas and coal in our clean energy future. We must set a deadline for the phasing out of oil and gas production, just like we did with coal power across the country.
2. A just transition: Transitioning to a green economy need not harm workers and their communities. We must protect workers' rights, enhance the social security net, and empower vulnerable communities to make the transition to a cleaner economy, on their own terms.
3. Inclusive growth: The potential for further marginalization of Indigenous peoples, racialized workers, women and other groups in the clean economy can be avoided with proactive policies to train, recruit and support these workers.
4. Public funding: Climate experts suggest that we need to be spending between 1-2% of GDP<https://policyalternatives.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=50ab80acdbcc30e47a51c061b&id=85564f7ac4&e=632fdac524>—as much as $40 billion a year—to decarbonize the Canadian economy. Current federal commitments are only a fraction of that figure.
