Kevin and I have been approached by the Ontario Headwaters Institute to be
involved in a headwater hikes project that they are developing. Kevin gave
the ED of the organization a car tour recently of some of the amazing areas
in our greenbelt.

They are wanting to include us in the program. Kevin and I are quite
enthusiastic about it. It would be a way to help raise our profile, etc.
with minimal work. I have attached their proposal. If you look at the e-mail
below you will see the kind of involvement that they see for us.

I¹ll be bringing the idea to the GREN meeting this week for a decision as to
our support for it. If you have any questions or concerns about it, please
let me know as soon as possible so I can contact Andrew (the ED) to get
answers before our meeting on Wednesday.

John

Subject: Headwater Hikes Concept, as promised

Hi all,

As promised, I enclose a copy of the draft material for our application to
the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation to enable us to develop a series of
ten Headwater Hikes across the Greenbelt.

As mentioned, your group would receive a digital version of the material on
any local headwater hike, which you can post on your website and/or use as
you see fit to drive membership, funding, and local interest in the
Greenbelt and its pending review. Our only requested restriction in that
regard is with respect to schools, for which we have in fact developed
improved wording since our convrersations as described in item 2 below.

Just a few evolving items that I wish to flag for your consideration:

1. The draft cover page from the Greenbelt Foundation contains the
following: List all project partners: Preliminary support confirmed with
Save the Oak Ridges Moraine, Friends of the Rouge Watershed, Oakville Green,
the Grand River Environmental Network, and the Coalition on the Niagara
Escarpment. Additional support will be sought through both the Credit River
Alliance and the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance, of which the OHI is a member.
While we are open to comments now, the Greenbelt is only soliciting letters
of intent at this time, and we'd chat with each of you in more detail if and
when the OHI gets invited to submit a detailed application.

2. Item 7 on the bottom of page 1 improves on the oral description I
provided on the phone about schools. The new wording encourages your group
to take the lead on a local, one-off hike with a class, although we'd remain
available to assist you in any one-off hike, but provides a clearer
statement about our desire to ensure your future non-involvement in
delivering on-going school programming to take classes out to headwater
areas; and,

3. The very last section on page 2, relating to 2015, is new. I think
you'll find it useful, but I need to go back to the Foundation to understand
if and how we'd request and receive financial support for actions more than
a year downstream, and which may have deliverables more difficult to
garantee than all the other aspects of the application.

Please let me know your thoughts by the end of Tuesday,

Andrew
