Hi Greg etal,

FYI I wrote this article for the anti-fluoridation people and I'm reasonably
confident with these arguments. Would be curious to hear counter-arguments
to refute them.

Water Fluoridation in Waterloo

 

For more than four decades, some communities have been artificially
fluoridating their water. This practice has never been without controversy.
In the upcoming municipal election on October 25, 2010, you will be asked
whether you support the City of Waterloo fluoridating your municipal
drinking water.   

 

There are a few things you should know:

 

1)      Your water is NOT being fluoridated with the same fluoride used by
dentists. It IS being fluoridated with a hazardous, industrial waste
product, hydrofluorosilicic acid that is contaminated with trace levels of
arsenic, lead and other heavy metals. Fluoridation of water supplies also
increases the uptake of lead solder from the pipes. There are no "safe"
levels of exposure from these heavy metals, especially for children.

 

2)      Fluoride accumulates in human body tissue, otherwise it would not
become incorporated into tooth enamel. 

 

3)      Fluoridating your water means everyone is being "dosed" with the
same amount of fluoride, regardless of their age, body mass, need, health or
consent.  

 

4)      "Statistics Canada studied the dental health of more than 5,000
Canadians between 2007 and 2009. The cavity rates in Ontario, where
fluoridation is widespread, were remarkably similar to those in Quebec,
where fluoridation is uncommon." Globe and Mail April 15, 2010

5)      Less than 1% of municipal water is actually consumed, so we are
needlessly contaminating our environment with trace levels of arsenic and
lead.

 

6)      Fluoride is not without health risks. These include dental, skeletal
and soft tissue fluorosis, increased fluoride uptake in people with kidney
disease, neurotoxicity, brittle teeth and bones - that can increase the risk
for hip fractures. Fluoride has a strong affinity for the thyroid gland
where it displaces iodine. Several cancers are associated with fluoride
exposure, namely osteosarcoma and breast cancer. 

 

7)      Last, but not least, Canada's new Natural Health Products
Regulations came into effect on January 1, 2004 under the Food and Drug Act.
Due to a backlog of requests from manufacturers for regulatory approval,
Health Canada provided a moratorium to manufacturers of fluoridation
products until January 1, 2010. To date, Health Canada has never regulated
or approved the fluoride products used in artificial water fluoridation to
ensure that they are safe for Canadians or that they prevent cavities, as
claimed. According to the law, products sold without this regulatory
approval cannot be legally sold in Canada.

 

So why is Waterloo water still being fluoridated with a hazardous industrial
waste product?
