Hi Everyone,
When we get correspondence like this via email, we need a process in place
to respond, so we don't lose potential members and to ensure we stay on top
of emerging issues.
I recommend that the responsibility be rotated among the 3 secretaries to
respond with an email to:
1) determine if and what immediate action, if any, is requested of GREN
and/or specific GREN members
2) determine if the person is appropriate for a guest speaker at our next
GREN meeting, time permitting, or
3) just extend an invitation to attend next GREN meeting and provide an
update, or
4) ask if the email should just be circulated to the GREN list, or
5) if the person should receive a "form" email explaining that we are all
volunteers, they are welcome to join GREN and be added to the elist and it's
up to them to initiate and recruit (as needed) other GREN members for their
issue.
I can draft a "form" email response for your consideration. Let me know how
we want to proceed as this email requires a response.
Thanks,
Susan K

Good afternoon,
I have just learned about your organization from a friend at the University
of Waterloo. I am writing to you to increase public awareness of the
proposed Cambridge West Community Development and to seek your expertise. My
family is very concerned about the affect this development will have on
Barrie's Lake, ESPA 57, a provincially significant wetland, Devil's Creek
and the surrounding wetlands and rural areas. I have attached the map of the
Cambridge West Community MESP that we received from the City of Cambridge.
We have been told that a notice for the first public meeting will be placed
in the Cambridge Times. This meeting may be in December and we are afraid
that few people will attend so close to Christmas and sign the mailing list.
If anyone from your organization is interested in being placed on the
mailing list for meetings about the Cambridge West Community MESP please
contact "Jim Kirchin" KirchinJ at cambridge.ca

My family purchased land that Barrie's Lake is on over 20 years ago and we
have fought battles against gravel pits, the spreading of sludge and
pesticides and a plan to build a road through the wetlands. My mother
Bernice Beal, purchased unusable, landlocked land from the gravel pits as a
last resort to stop gravel extraction beside the lake that would have
destroyed Barrie's Lake and Gilholm Marsh. We own about 80 acres in North
Dumfries and would rightly never be allowed to build more than one dwelling
on our property because of the Barrie's Lake wetlands, however, Cambridge
may be allowed to build an entire subdivision at the east end of the lake.
We are very concerned about groundwater issues and the lack of government
controls and inspection and how this will affect the wetlands and wildlife.
Also, drilling for soil samples is taking place directly north of Barrie's
Lake, across Roseville Road. There may be gravel extraction plans for this
area.
Please let me know if you would like any other information. If there is
anything you can suggest to protect this rare and fragile wetland and its
wildlife, we would be very thankful. It will not survive being surrounded by
subdivisions and gravel pits. Please let us know if there is anyone else we
can contact or if you have any suggestions.
Thank you,
Sue Stubley
