Campaign Newsletter, Volume 6       December 6, 2010

Thank you to....

This evening at Kitchener City Hall, Zyg Janecki will be sworn in as the new City Councillor for Ward 8. Congratulations to Zyg on his victory and best wishes to him as he continues to serve the community in this new capacity.

It would be easy to focus on how close I came to winning and on what I might have done differently during the campaign (privately, I've been doing a lot of both), but I'd rather concentrate on expressing thanks.

Thanks most of all to the 1783 people (41% of voters in the ward) who voted for me to be their City Councillor, and to those who voted for someone else (because, at least they voted).

Thanks to everyone who endorsed my candidacy, took one of my signs, or told a friend that I was worth supporting.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered on my campaign, but especially to Kathy G., Jim M., James D., Linda K., Mary W., Sonia W., Peter T., Brian F. (and friends), and Marc X.

Thanks to the professionals who assisted me, including Stephanie Ballantyne (design) and Lindsay Stewart (videos, photos).

Thanks to everyone who donated to my campaign, making it possible for me to run without incurring a massive personal debt (more on that subject below).

Thanks to my family for putting up with my repeated absences and for supporting me through both the campaign and the aftermath of Election Day.

Thanks to everyone who ran in the election, particularly to Zyg and to Bill Pegg, the third candidate in Ward 8.

Congratulations to all successful candidates, particularly to Kitchener's newest school trustee, Margaret Johnston.

To all those who have said "next time", I can only say "no promises". 2014 is a long way off and it's way too early to make that kind of commitment. Running a campaign takes a lot out of person; running repeated losing campaigns takes even more. I will have to assess my personal time commitments, the impact on my family and the political landscape before making any decision.

One thing is certain: I will continue to care about my community and I will continue to work to make it a better place. Let's all work together on that.

Campaign debt
I emerged from the campaign with an unfunded deficit of just over $700.00 -- essentially money that I borrowed from my family's household budget.

If seventy people you could find $10.00 to donate, or ten people could donate $70.00 each, that would allow me to break even.

The campaign period ends on December 31, unless I apply for an extension. Please consider helping if you can.

Rules for donations
Donations are not tax-creditable, are limited to $750 per person and can come only from those who are "ordinarily resident in Ontario".

In addition, I have made a personal decision that I will not accept donations from developers.

All donations must be accompanied by the donor's full name, address and phone number.

By law, the identity of anyone donating $100 or more must be disclosed to the public.

How to donatE
To donate online (by credit card or by direct debit to your account), visit  http://www.scottpiatkowski.ca/index.php?page=getinvolved
and click on the PayPal button.

If you prefer to donate by cheque or money order, please send your donation (payable to the "Scott Piatkowski Campaign") to:

     Scott Piatkowski
     44 Katherine Crescent
     Kitchener, ON N2M 2K1

Thank you to all donors. You have helped to make democracy possible in this community.
