FW: [GREN-Exec] FW: Hanlon Creek and GRENIt is important to focus on who reads the Mercury. What age group, what demographic, etc. Most people do not have time but to look at the headlines while some mill through it all day. It is also important to know where this add will go in the paper.
Truth is we will never know its effect.

I agree with Susan, though my attachment included only the great picture in the top half, with the stats and Margaret Mead quote---no other text. So I don't have all the info, obviously. But in general, I want to know how I can help or lend my voice---some easy, quick way. And if I have more time and passion to give, who do I call. Highlight that stuff.

Any other comments? See Susan's detailed comments. I have forwarded them to Matt. It certainly confirms my thoughts.

What is the goal of this ad? To counteract city propaganda? To gain general public support? To get money? To educate? It's trying to do too much, simplify the message to something like Stop Sprawl - Stop Hanlon Creek Business Park as a big heading. Or This is Guelph's Natural Backyard or Keep the Wild in Guelph or Nature You can Walk To.
Good parts: Great photo, great list of what it is (but needs to be shortened to what has the most impact and relevance), great to thank supporters, great quote from Margaret Mead
Not so good parts: A little busy. Think simple, simple, simple - cut back on the text. The script was hard to read. "the city is demonizing us" - even if it's true, sounds a little paranoid and if we want public support, they need to think they're backing winners. What can I (John and Jane Q. Public) gain from the occupation and from helping?
Be very clear what you are asking people to do - you've got about 10 seconds for people to take in all the information from your beautiful ad.
I would also right-justify the line "Special thanks etc" 8-)

hi john and david,
matt and matt have been working away on the ad, and it is attached for you to take a look at and do what you need to do to acquire approval. it will be in wednesday's Guelph Mercury. the person in the ad dep't was friendly, and made available a space for a colour ad. altogether the price is $472, if you are still able to cover $400 that would be great, and we can get donations for the other $72.
let us know any thoughts, about the ad or other ideas too.
take care,
matt and matt

Matt,
Thank you for coming to speak to GREN this evening. It was highly informative and well received. It will take a while for the official minutes from our meeting to be circulated to our wide membership and network.
As a member of the liaison committee I wanted to confirm GREN passed a motion at our meeting pledging $400 for an ad in the September Guelph Mercury. Arrangements to collect the funds can be made directly with our Chairperson, John Jackson who is cc on this email.
As a condition of funding the GREN executive must approve the ad to ensure it adheres to our organisations mission and is family friendly. For more on our mission please visit www.gren.ca <http://www.gren.ca> . Based on our conversation it appears we are all on the same page and hopefully this will only be a formality. If I have misconstured anything John will clarify.
Respectfully yours,
David Wellhauser
