<p>Earlier this year, Indigenous, Black, People of Colour delegates and climate leaders attended the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) shareholder meeting.</p>
<p>A delegation of frontline leaders, all of whom held valid proxies from RBC shareholders, were met with aggression and force when they attempted to enter the main room of the RBC Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon.</p>
<p><strong>RBC employed a racist, colour coded pass system to segregate Indigenous and racialized delegates into a separate room,</strong> denying them entry to the main board and shareholder meeting room. <strong>RBC security and police aggressively enforced this segregation, threatening members of the delegation with arrest, and assaulting Indigenous matriarchs and Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Now, the delegation is demanding that RBC take responsibility for this mistreatment and apologize.</strong> They’ve released an open letter, and over 154 organizations and 2000 people have signed it.</p>

<p><strong>RBC CEO Dave Mckay and senior executives, John Stackhouse and Richard Boulianne, actively facilitated this segregation on behalf of RBC.</strong></p>
<p>Security laid hands on Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Na’Moks’ regalia, which is the highest form of disrespect in Wet’suwet’en culture. Chief Na’Moks called out RBC’s CEO directly saying, <em>“You have offended a high chief. I hold you personally accountable, Dave McKay.”</em></p>
<p><strong>The Wet’suwet’en Nation is currently resisting the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline, of which RBC is the primary funder. </strong>The pipeline, responsible for a recent sediment spill in the Wedzin Kwa, lacks Free, Prior and Informed Consent of the Dinï ze’ (chiefs) and Tsako ze’ (matriarchs), the rightful title holders of Wet’suwet’en territory.</p>
<p><strong>The letter highlights RBC’s complicity in intersecting injustices, including anti-Black racism in the Gulf Coast, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives crisis.</strong></p>

<p>The level of impunity with which RBC carried out blatant, public, dehumanizing racism at its shareholder meeting is unlike anything we’ve ever witnessed. But now, we are witnessing an extraordinary media firestorm and a remarkable display of solidarity across Turtle Island, rallying behind our movement like never before.</p>
<p>We’re going all the way in this campaign. We’re going to keep hitting RBC where it hurts, in their public image and in their pockets.</p>
