<p>It’s that time of year again! The National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) released it’s 2020 algae bloom prediction for Lake Erie.</p>
<p><em><strong> *drum roll*</strong></em><br />
<br />
This year, Lake Erie’s algae bloom is expected to reach a 4.5 severity level.</p>
<p><strong>So what does that mean and should we be concerned?</strong></p>
<p>Any index above a 4 severity level indicates a bloom having a significant impact. Algae blooms can be toxic and harmful not only to the lake’s ecosystem but also to our pets, fish, beachgoers and the 11 million people that depend on the lake as a source of drinking water.</p>
<p>In fact, blooms don’t need to be off the scales to cause serious damage. In 2014, the bloom was predicted at a level 6 severity. Over the summer, the bloom grew and drifted into water intake zones, leaving residents of Toledo, Ohio and Pelee Island, Ontario without drinking water for several days.</p>
<p><strong>This shouldn’t be the new normal.</strong></p>
<p>Lake Erie algae blooms are a result of excess nutrients like phosphorus running off the land and into the lake from farm fields after snowmelt or heavy rainfall. Add some sun and boom! You got yourself a bloom. </p>
<p style="margin:0px 0px 10px"><a href="https://e-activist.com/page/email/click/2098/4809638?email=f95wdg6zv%2BQTh1kBDPcL8%2BE%2FutUh99%2FK&campid=%2FDwG1gqEXyyq8wJuoPi1Lg==" style="text-decoration:none">Unfortunately, government efforts to stop excess phosphorus from getting into Lake Erie haven’t gone far enough. </a></p>
<p style="margin:0px 0px 10px">The Ontario and the federal governments have a plan aimed at addressing the damaging blooms in Lake Erie but the implementation of the plan is now 18 months overdue. </p>
<p style="margin:0px 0px 10px">Lake Erie can’t afford more delays!</p>
