I've warned against such things for many years. I also gave warnings about heat island effects in this area as well as with Costco in 2014 and prior to that in 2009 regarding the Mega Mall plans on Ira Needles.</font></div><div><font size="3"><br></font></div><div><font size="3">Here is the video warning I posted regarding the Boardwalk Mall on Ira Needles back in 2009. I voiced concerns for water quality. water volumes and heat island effects. The day I filmed this the winds were so strong I could barely breath. Vegetables had to be given away because they were wet and would spoil quick. Lots of merchandise damaged because it got wet. People were giving items away. </font></div><div><font size="3"><br></font></div><div><font size="3"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FBZcOQugZg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FBZcOQugZg</a></font></div><div><font size="3"><br></font></div><div><font size="3">I spoke with many people that day and learned how<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"> shoppers couldn't enter buildings for shelter because there were not enough doors to go in. (this was before the fire with the old building). One vendor told me it was the second time this happened to her at this location. </span></font></div><div><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br></font></span></div><div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3">I initiated an Ontario Municipal Board hearing, case PL071044 regarding the need to protect the wetlands and creeks of the West Side Lands, particularly in Vista Hills and I successfully won all concessions via the experts meeting as seen in the attachments. The goal was to protect Clair Creek, the Wetlands and ESPA 19 which is the forest between Columbia Forest and Vista Hills. I helped to protect capture zones of the Waterloo Moraine by increasing habitat protection for fish and endangered salamanders. It is my belief that it was the moraines and these forested areas that have served to protect the City of Waterloo from tornadic activities for many generations acting as a buffer zone of cooling for West Bound winds. It is also my view that the houses in Vista Hills are built on unsafe ground geologically speaking.</font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br clear="none"></font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3">The heat islands are often generated from vast paved areas or areas where vegetation has been removed exposing sand. The hot sands and pavement gather heat. When cooler air systems move in and encounters these heat islands, it creates strong winds upwards with the heat and downwards with the cooler air. </font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br clear="none"></font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3">To illustrate, get a stick of incense. Hold it over a table and watch how the smoke rises. Then take that same stick of incense and move it over a warm candle and you'll see how the rate of flow of the smoke rapidly increases and expands upwards. Just like the smoke of the incense, when heat thermals go up it expands and displaces cold air increasing risks of tornadic activity or micro bursts downwards. This is the reason water spouts are often seen around shorelines. When the temperature at the ground level are hotter than the cold air blowing in, heat thermals going up and cold weather goes down and winds grow strong. </font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br clear="none"></font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3">When it comes to climate change issues, the entire Alberta Tar Sands area is a giant heat island where dark pools of waste water, tar sands production and exposed sandy soil generates a huge area of heat that pushes hot air up, expands and offsets arctic jet streams. When the cold system came off the moist farmland areas, up went the heat and down came the winds and rain along with those houses. It doesn't help they are built on sand. The rains were heavy and localized flooding is visible in the photos I took today. (Oct. 16) That water is on a lot for houses. The depth is significant. The area here was all primary recharge. </font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br clear="none"></font></div><div><font size="3">The Forested hills and farmlands to the West of Waterloo have protected Waterloo for many years acting as a cooling effect for storm systems heading West to East but thanks to the West Side Lands and other heavily paved projects along the western boundary, we're opening ourselves up to higher risks of severe storms and tornadoes. To mitigate these risks we need to cool areas off. Natural wetlands provide up to 10 degree temperature difference but you have to have it salt free if you want to naturally control mosquito populations for the long term. We need lots of trees and leafy vegetation to shade these paved areas to create a smoother transition from rural to urban temperatures to offset the potential for storm damages. Vegetation can help transfer the moisture back into the ground where it belongs. This area would be very good candidate for plant covered soak away zones. </font></div><div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><font size="3"><br clear="none"></font></div><div><font size="3">By applying physics to geology we can work to cool urban areas to help mitigate risks. Climate science and development activities are not separate issues. Development has consequences.
