and the plans, supported by the Bill Davis government, for awarding a licence for a second mill to the same company. This was in 1977-78.

<div>It was quite a fight. We were investigated by the OPP because Queen's Park was trying to figure out the source of leaked information, and one night a private detective hired by Reed broke into and rifled through papers in my office at the University
of Waterloo.. I also visited several media offices in the UK. One of them decided to do its own investigation and exposed some very interesting financial dealings between the manager of the Dryden mill and Lord Ryder, the CEO of Reed, that hadn't been laundered
well enough when passed through a bank in the tax haven of the island of Jersey. A great boost to the campaign came from the Waterloo Public Interest Research Group which published a 20-page investigative tabloid called "Quicksilver and Slow Death" about
the mercury poisoning. </div>

<div>It is sorrowful to learn how lasting the effects of heavy metal pollution can be, both to the environment and human health.</div>

<div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1474397470400_14172">More than 90 per cent of the people tested in Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations are showing signs of mercury poisoning, according to shocking new research released today by Japanese experts.</div>
<div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1474397470400_14173">"I can't do any sewing unless I look at the needle and see if it's in my hand," said Barbara Fobister, 63, to the CBC. "In the kitchen, when I have to peel potatoes, everything is more difficult."<br>
<br>
The report found that people not even born when the mercury was being dumped in the river are demonstrating the symptoms of poisoning. <strong>The majority of people tested are experiencing sensory deprivation</strong> — the loss of feeling in fingers and lips
which is a classic symptom of mercury poisoning. <br>
<br>
While Ontario drags its feet, the people of Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations are leading the fight for clean water for everyone and justice for Indigenous peoples.</div>
