The next few months will be the time for GREN to make input on changes to Waterloo Region’s Water Supply Master Plan (WSMP) and Water Efficiency Master Plan (WEMP). These plans are important to the work that GREN has been conducting since our formation. Our water symposium at the Slit Barn last June was an example of our educational activities on this.

The WSMP is the document that sets 2035 as the year by which we will need a pipeline to Lake Erie. Our expectation is that, because water efficiency and conservation has been having better results than expected, the timelines for this pipeline will be extended from 2035 to 2051 or later. Per capita residential water use in Waterloo Region has been reduced from 238 litres per day in 2007 to 203 litres per day in 2013.
Water Supply Master Plan (WSMP): This is the plan that currently has the Lake Erie pipeline in it as needed by 2035. The Region will be holding three open houses next week to release their proposed new alternatives. The sessions are:
The Region plans to put the WSMP draft plan materials on their website about a week after the open houses.
Water Efficiency Master Plan (WEMP): This draft plan will be released in January with three open houses with public comment to be completed sometime in March.
We’ll keep you up-to-date on both of these.
