style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Forum 1 took place today at Knox Church encouraging NGO's, industry and public to collaborate with municipal officials in coming up with local climate change solutions. It was an overview of the program, an introduction into a new Climate Change Policy for the Region and a workshop on ways to move towards greater sustainability objectives. Next sessions are on Thursday at the Museum in Kitchener and on Monday at Cambridge City Hall. Pre-registrations can be done online here: http://www.climateactionwr.ca/participate/community-forums/

PERSONAL OPINION: The program appeared to be geared towards "marketing the region" as being sustainable. It is working with provincial growth targets as being absolute rather than optional. (50% population growth anticipated) It seemed very clear the staff were seeking comments based on a list of "pre-designated issues" rather than opening up dialogue on "should we grow" or "what is our geological carrying capacity" approach but none the less, people are given a form to give comment on the new strategy and there is room to tuck in ideas in there.

One of the key issues that was not discussed was the Lake Erie pipeline but there was strong support for the Region's current battle to support the official plan at the OMB. That was very good to see but experts on the panel did admit if that OMB process fails, we're pretty much screwed. That's not what they said verbatim but it is what it is. Either way, it was good to see GREN folks there and I think we really need to send the message that sustainability within geological carrying capacity should be given top priority. A Similar message to what was shared with the GRCA's water budget masterplan would be good: Plan within carrying capacity and protect source areas and farmlands for generations to come.

<div
