Hi folks<br><br>I also took the opportunity to add my comments, which are now posted in the list of signees. <br> <br>What I stated was " Capitalism thrives on PROFIT which = Revenues - Expenses. !! When it comes to expenses resource industries such as oil companies, mines and nuclear plants must include as an expense the cost of clean up- either in the form of oil spills, mine tailing pollution in a lake or nuclear by product storage. It is their responsibility NOT the taxpayers !!<br> <br>The horrendous cost of cleaning up the oil spill in the Gulf will probably exceed $40 billion before it is finally fixed. Clearly Canada needs tougher legislation in this regard, as explained below.<br> <br>I hope you will read the petition and support putting pressure on the federal government to update the legislation.<br> <br>In essence please support the concept that THE POLLUTER PAYS --- NOT THE TAXPAYER <br> <br>Many thanks<br> <br>Gord<br> <br><br>

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico wasn't just environmentally devastating -- it was also incredibly expensive to clean up. Overall, trying to repair the damage to the Gulf's ecosystems cost 40 billion dollars. But if the spill had happened in Canadian waters, <a style="color: rgb(31, 102, 147); font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AhGuj/znWO/BfBdo" target="_blank">the company responsible would only have to contribute up to $40 million.</a><br>

I know it seems like these numbers all sound the same when they get that high. But the fact is that $40 million -- or, if the spill happens in the Atlantic as opposed to the Arctic, $30 million -- most likely won't be enough money to cover even a fraction of the devastation that occurs in an oil spill. <a style="color: rgb(31, 102, 147); font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AhGuj/znWO/BfBdo" target="_blank">Since the ocean will have to be cleaned somehow, the rest of that bill will go to you, the Canadian taxpayer.</a>
This wildly outdated policy doesn't encourage safety or responsibility for corporations -- and that's not good for us or our oceans.<p>It's high time that Canada revise this ancient, ineffective law. <a style="color: rgb(31, 102, 147); font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AhGuj/znWO/BfBdo" target="_blank"> Ask the government to raise the liability limits for oil, gas or nuclear disasters.</a>
