<span style="font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;">Last Saturday communities across Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern United States united in a Day of Action against Enbridge’s <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=eeb337c3d4&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">Line 9</a> proposal.<br>
<br>
Enbridge wants to reverse its Line 9 pipeline that runs from Sarnia to Montreal, and permission to ship heavy crude, which could include tar sands oil, through the pipeline. A second pipeline owned by Exxon could take the oil to Maine for export.<br>

Over 25 Day of Action events took place along the pipelines’ route, from <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=33c51b70ff&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">Burlington, Ontario </a>to <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=2291f11684&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">Portland, Maine</a>. We hosted a rally at Toronto City Hall, and a No Line 9 Twitter chat. Thanks to everyone who participated.<br>

In Waterloo, ON a battle is brewing over urban sprawl. A handful of sprawl-smitten developers are stuck on the old, inefficient way of building communities, and the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) recently backed them up. <br>

<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=6eeec8745b&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">Last week</a> the OMB was convinced to overrule the Region of Waterloo’s official plan and allow 10 times more farmers’ fields and wilderness to be piped and paved than the plan asks for.<br>

We <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=e7c08995db&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">applaud</a> the Region’s resolution to <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=f83613ad21&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;">appeal</a> the OMB’s ruling. The Region shouldn’t be punished for trying to do the right thing by growing responsibly and reducing urban sprawl. </span><br>

Starting next January, new Canadian regulations will kick-in removing incandescent light bulbs from store shelves and replacing them with more energy-efficient <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank"
href="http://environmentaldefence.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=2117f6f873721e20b14d2f4ff&id=3dd2a29b26&e=a798b09382" style="color:#336699;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline;"><b>compact fluorescent lights</b></a> (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). <br>

As environmentalists, we applaud this move to reduce energy consumption and the use of fossil fuels such as coal. However, CFLs do contain a chemical of concern: mercury.
