The Record’s editorial writers recently praised Kitchener councillors for coming to an “intelligent” and “sensible” solution to the issue of backyard fires.

The touted “intelligent” and “sensible” solution is that people can only have fires between 5 and 11 p.m. That’s not a sensible compromise. That is a total sellout to the people who want backyard fires and a dismissal of those with health and nuisance concerns.

I am sure that 95 per cent of those who want fires only want to burn them between 5 and 11 — the prime time to be outside enjoying your yard. This means that the rest of us who don’t want to be exposed to smoke and to the pollution from fires cannot enjoy our backyards at this prime time. It also means that we can’t open our windows in the evening to cool off the house so we can get a better sleep.

My thanks to the three councillors — Dan Glenn-Graham, John Gazzola and Zyg Janecki — who voted against this mislabelled “intelligent” and “sensible” solution that gives the burners everything they wanted.

I hope that when this issue comes to council again at the bylaw stage next March, the rest of council will see the wisdom of these three councillors and will vote for a ban on outdoor burning similar to that in our neighbouring municipalities of Cambridge and Waterloo.
If you support a backyard fire ban in Kitchener, please sign this petition. I support a ban because our homes are too close to allow adequate ventilation and the smoke from the fires contributes to poor air quality and exacerbates respiratory health issues.
