Interestingly, I had already put the nukes item on the agenda for us to discuss in October as a possible event. I am currently heavily involved in the issue of nuclear waste disposal. This year I have spoken three times in the communities along Lake Huron that are currently considering being the site for the disposal of nuclear fuel bundles. They have had between 200 and 300 people out to each of those meetings. It was a pleasure to see Norah and Richard at the meeting in August. Also Great Lakes United is an intervenor in the current environmental assessment regarding the “low to mid=level” wastes on the Bruce Power site.<BR>

Many of the people who summer along the shores of Lake Huron live in the Grand River watershed. So the community group there and I had been thinking of holding a meeting on this issue sometime this winter particularly aimed at reaching those people.<BR>
<BR>
Let’s discuss this idea at the October meeting. One of the questions to consider at that time is whether this fits within the scope of our mandate as a GREN activity being as it is not directly linked to the Grand River Watershed.<BR>

Now her agency is asking for my help to promote the dangers of Ontario's nuclear power plans. <BR>

I have since informed my friend Angela Bischoff from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance to include the IICPH into their membership and I'm networking her with others that I know including GREN. Perhaps in the days ahead we may wish to facilitate a public lecture for this group to educate our local residents about the hazards of Nuclear Power. <BR>

We have been working since 1984 to influence people and governments about these hazards particularly ionizing (nuclear) radiation. We have managed to influence a lot of people including ones in environmental NGOs. However, along with our colleagues, reaching the critical mass of people in Canada necessary to force the government to phase out nuclear industries has been unsuccessful. <BR>
In Germany, since Fukushima, they achieved that critical mass and successfully got the German government to back away from their plans to build new reactors and they are going to be phasing out the ones they now have. Other European countries have now followed their lead. At present, the Japanese citizens are working on their government to gain the same result. <BR>
Because of your interest, I would like to talk to you about possibly working together with us in our campaign to educate the public particularly in Ontario. The Ontario government is planning to build as many as possibly four new reactors at Darlington nuclear power station. We are engaged at present with other NGOs in trying to persuade them against this. <BR>

At a conference at University of Waterloo on August 24, there were representatives from Fort Chipewyan Alberta. They said the tar sands are set to run out of Natural Gas in 25 years and that operations will be replaced by planned nuclear power from 13 nuclear plants. I asked the residents if there is Uranium in the soil up that way and they confirmed it. They said there is actually a massive quarry planned to extract Uranium 19km away from Fort Chipewyan to supply the proposed nuke plants. <BR>

They spoke of the numerous deformed fish that have tumors and deformities including a double jawed white fish with eye teeth on the bottom jaw. Normally white fish have no eye teeth at all. Numerous photos of the deformed fish have been circulated in the media. <BR>

Currently the workers at the tar sands are removing massive quantities of sediment each day. I have not encountered any information regarding the impacts of the dust particulates associated with the sediment removal at all. Everyone's focused on the oil not the sediment but I have found online reports by the Alberta Government which speak of the prospects of Uranium Mining. Like Ontario, the Alberta MNR has no regard at all for potential cumiliative impacts of environmental discharge or emissions. There is no centralized database on it. Generally discharge permits are kept by corporations in hand. Particulate concerns may or may not be part of the permit process but I'm not sure. Generally in Ontario, Canada, aggregates are not required to have Environmental Assessment processes on the believe it's not releasing anything into the environment. There is no regard for what toxins they might actually be digging up or the impacts of the dust they stir up. <BR>

All the muskrats are dead and gone. I'm wondering if uranium dust may be partially to blame.<BR>

We have a doctor at University of Waterloo who measured the urine of Gulf War vets in Canada and found 10 years after exposure they still had radiation in their urine. It would be interesting to know if workers involved with tar sands have levels of uranium toxicity.<BR>
