is currently appealing to citizens for ways to celebrate the city’s
centennial this year. I think local eco-heroes Gord and Daphne Nicholls have
come up with a very exciting idea: buy <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Hidden</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Valley</st1:PlaceType> to create a signature park and
heritage bike/hike trail from the <st1:City w:st="on">Freeport</st1:City> flood
plain to the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Pioneer</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Tower</st1:PlaceType> following the <st1:place w:st="on">Grand River</st1:place>.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><font
size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'>This
centennial park would create a legacy that protects and connects us to natural
and social heritage features such as the Carolinian forest, bald eagles, the
Homer Watson House, Doon Heritage Crossroads, the new <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Region</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Museum</st1:PlaceType>
and the <st1:place w:st="on">Grand River</st1:place> itself.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

sources could include reallocated Environmental Action Funds and monies already

city’s centennial. I also suspect that a project like this would have

family frequently bikes the <st1:City w:st="on">Cambridge-to-Paris</st1:City>
rails-to-trails path and <st1:City w:st="on">Kitchener</st1:City>’s and <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Waterloo</st1:place></st1:City>’s off-road
trail system. We’ve also biked along the Canal du Midi in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">France</st1:place></st1:country-region> with its
barges, locks, cacophonous cicadas, plane trees and delightful village stops
along the way. The possibility of saving travel expenses, hopping on the light
rail transit with our bikes and then riding for hours along our beautiful
heritage river would indeed be grand.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
