past Monday I made an
independent presentation to my local municipal council on this issue. I
made a request to the City of Waterloo to submit a request for an environmental
assessment to the Ministry of the Environment with regards to this
proposal. </font></span></span><span class="ecx680463200-30062011"><span class="ecxmessageBody"><font style="font-size:10pt" face="Arial" size="2">Many
groups opposing this project feel that such a request needs to be made
to ensure a project of this magnitude and complexity is given the
careful consideration it warrants.<br><br></font></span></span><span class="ecx680463200-30062011"><span class="ecxmessageBody"></span></span><span class="ecx680463200-30062011"><span class="ecxmessageBody"><font style="font-size:10pt" face="Arial" size="2">As you know, my request </font></span></span><span class="ecx680463200-30062011"><span class="ecxmessageBody"><font style="font-size:10pt" face="Arial" size="2">was
turned down. Additionally, however, <b>the City made the decision to refer future applications for new
pits and quarries that may have an impact on source water protection to
the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), the Regional Municipality
of Waterloo, and</b></font></span></span><b> the Grand River Sourcewater
Protection Committee. </b>This is despite the policies in the existing (s.
2.7 and s. 1.7.2.3) and draft (Section G) official plan that regulate
the development of aggregate resources and encourage the safeguarding of
both surface and groundwater.<br><br><span class="ecx680463200-30062011"><span class="ecxmessageBody"><font style="font-size: 10pt;" face="Arial" size="2">This is a highly significant issue,
affecting our future supplies of water and resources, with ripple-effects on
Canadian self-determination in management of our environmental heritage. Thoughts on the City's stance on future pits and quarries would be appreciated. For instance, are there plans for designating any new pits and quarries in the City of Waterloo?
