Thanks Lulu. Very good event.
The ECO Gord Miller said a few years ago at a GWO annual
presentation that if they increased the cost of gravel by a few
cents per ton, it would accelerate the companies to do more re-use
of aggregate. In Northern Ontario he said they re-used 85% of their
aggregate whereas in Southern Ontario they only re-used 6% because
it is cheap and close by. We need to update those stats from the ECO
and use them ..
Last week at the GWO annual presentation someone on the panel stated
that the re-use of aggregate in S.Ont is now 13% . Not good enough.!
Could you confirm these numbers (re cost per ton) from the ECO and
feed that back to Leanne. ? Norah
Pendergast released a news release yesterday with
details regarding the costs associated with gravel
pits and agricultural interests. She's got the numbers
to strongly support the cause of protecting farmland.
This isn't a quick election thing, this document took
actual work to craft with great care and the result is
a compelling fiscal argument. I aspire to see a
similar report done on the worth of water someday. For
all the time I've known Ms. Pendergast, she has always
been a strong supporter for source water protection
crafting letters during my OMB Process and during the
Waterloo Moriane Request for Review for a Waterloo
Moraine Act. She's the real deal. The PDF is in the

Using a
similar format of her report I'd like to secure baseline
data on water permits currently issued for Waterloo
Region, to see how much companies are withdrawing, what
price they currently pay for it and what revenues do
they make from it. In understanding the value of water
being used in our region, the nature of the industries
using our water, we can better understand how the costs
of a pipeline could adversely impact these firms should
water prices rise etc. We need to structure the baseline
data to understand the current use of our own water
before we can determine the value of it. Once we have
the value, we can compare it to the numbers cited in
this report associated with it's aggregate worth.
