Thank you for your message regarding Canada's offshore oil drilling regulations and the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

On April 20, Transocean's drilling rig, Deepwater Horizon, contracted to BP, caught fire, burned for two days and sank in the Gulf of Mexico with the loss of eleven lives. In the wake of that tragic event, tens of millions of gallons of oil to date have flowed from the open well into Gulf waters. The extent of the Gulf oil spill and its ecological impact are of great concern. Officials from Fisheries and Oceans Canada are currently in the Gulf to assist our American neighbours.

Although there are currently no active authorizations or approvals for offshore exploration or production activities under the authority of Canada's National Energy Board (NEB), the Government has announced that the NEB will be conducting a thorough review of Canada's offshore drilling regulations. This review
will be open to the Canadian public and will incorporate information from other regulators. As well, the NEB will continue to closely watch the American investigation of this disaster as it is unfolds.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this important topic with the Prime Minister.

P.
