<DIV><STRONG>Climate Change back in the G8 & G20 Agenda</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV>The UN put some pressure on the Tories to cover Climate Change at the G8 and G20 summits stating that to negate the topic would discriminate against poor nations. It's back on the topics of discussion now. </DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Regarding SLAPP Legislation</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV>Environmental Defence has their SLAPP campaign on the "QT" meaning little publicity but lots of one on one communication with ministers. They stated to me that there is plenty of support and it looks like this issue will be advancing to legislation in the not so distant future. The topic is too hot to go public with at this time. They don't want to risk anyone going through another SLAPP. </DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Greenbelt Update</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV>A rep from an ecological agency stated to me that a group which has been pushing for the expansion of the greenbelt into areas of South Kitchener are going to be successful in their quest. No names were provided to me as to which group was lobbying for this but it's more or less a sure thing at this point. We'll see what becomes of this.</DIV>

<DIV><STRONG>Melancthon Update</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV>On June 17th in City Council there will be a presentation by Garry Hunter regarding water, speciality crop and <SPAN>OGS</SPAN> bedrock potential mapping as it relates to their official plan. (It might be good to grab hold of that data.)</DIV>

<DIV>A Big wind farm proposal in Melancthon is being made from a firm called 401 Energy. Details here: <A href="http://melancthontownship.ca/10council/corr.june17.pdf">http://melancthontownship.ca/10council/corr.june17.pdf</A></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>If you scroll at the bottom of that wind farm link, you will find a correspondence at the end of the PDF from Kawartha Lakes regarding a residential furnace oil leak that took place. The fuel spill exceeded the insurance costs and now the MOE are holding the TOWNSHIP responsible for clean up costs even though<EM><STRONG> they had nothing to do with the spill.</STRONG></EM> This issue resulted in the contamination of a lake. It was very costly for municipal taxpayers. There is a legal process underway in an effort to protect municipalities from such expenses. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The region is in the process of identifying high risk areas but we should make sure there are policies in place to address issues of this nature before similar issues happen.</DIV>
