<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>On Saturday, 26 September, the worst flooding in 42 years hit the capital city Manila and other areas of the northern Philippines. My husband's family is there and his cousin emailed me saying: </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><EM><SPAN class=UIStory_Message>The news is all over Marikina, Rosario, Cainta but is completely ignoring other places equally hard hit: Valenzuela and Bulacan. No electricity. No food or water.</SPAN> These people have no multi story homes. They have been living in waist deep water for 2 days. No help from local or federal government. </EM><SPAN class=UIStory_Message><EM>Valenzuela and Bulacan are being ignored despite the high waters and displaced families. 80 per cent of Metro Manila is still under water and more rain has been forecast.</EM> </SPAN></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The flooding was caused by a combination of Typhoon Ketsana and monsoon rains. The storm was not considered to be a major but it brought huge volumes of water that caught everybody off guard. In six hours 35 to 55 centimetres of rain fell on the area, an amount equivalent to a typical month's rainfall in the monsoon season. The government declared state of calamity for Manila and 25 other provinces in Luzon and the government is basically ignoring these poorer communities. The tallies on the news do not reflect the true scale of what is happening. </DIV>

<DIV>Red Cross Canada has a special donation page specific to Asia Typhoons 2009. It's a good way to help. <A href="http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=32729&tid=001">http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=32729&tid=001</A></DIV>

<DIV>Another way to help is to call your MP to support the Climate Change Accountability Act (Bill C-311). As citizens of the world, we're all in this together. What we do here matters to the folks down there. </DIV>

<DIV>Thanks folks</DIV>
