Good Day!
The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has announced they will be proceeding with the troubling land dispositions announced as part of Bill 23 at a meeting this coming Friday that we urge you to speak up about, there were really impressive delegations at the Region of Waterloo and Wilmot Township Council against the Wilmot land assembly, the Toronto Star recognizes the need for provincial electoral co-operation, there are lots of great resources for the federal election being announced, and more!
Here’s the latest:
1) GRCA Board Meeting and Land Disposition - At a time when Ontario’s population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate - and in fact doubled between 1971 and 2023 from 7.8 million to 15.6 million - it is unconscionable that the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is diminishing - not increasing its conservation land holdings.
This coming Friday, March 28th - the GRCA board will be going into a closed meeting to consider the fate of up to seven land holdings accounting for approximately 30 acres for disposition. The properties are located in Galt, Brantford, Inverhaugh, Guelph, and Rockwood. If the GRCA proceeds with the staff recommendations, board members will be voting for short-term financial gains leading to an impoverished legacy for future generations of Grand River watershed residents.
We urge you to take a minute to send this letter prepared by Environmental Defence that will reach each GRCA board member:
https://act.environmentaldefence.ca/page/168626/action/1
Please also take the time to distribute this important letter to friends, family, and neighbours.
If you have time on Friday morning starting at 9:30am, please also tune into the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQzB-PaauIc
You can learn more about out the meeting agenda here: https://events.grandriver.ca/directors/Detail/2025-03-28-0930-GRCA-General-Membership-Meetings/3761dfea-c8c6-4482-9d3a-b2a700f644ec
Action Required - Speak up now to urge the GRCA not to sell off our green space and instead increase protected lands.
2) Wilmot Land Assembly - Kudos to Fight For Farmland’s Susanna Compton who gave an incredibly powerful presentation calling out the Region of Waterloo about the Wilmot land grab at a standing room-only Regional Council meeting this past Wednesday as CUPE 1656 members and local citizens worked together to support each other.
Thanks to everyone who came and jointed the CUPE rally prior to the meeting. It was fantastic to see the recognition from CUPE’s provincial President Fred Hahn for all of our activities on the Fight For Farmland and it was great to see Susanna recognize CUPE’s fight in her delegation. Watch her delegation firsthand starting at the 43:30 mark:
Regional Council Meeting, Wed, March 19th YouTube:

On Monday night it was equally impressive to see Wilmot farmer Richard Good delegate to an overflowing Wilmot Council Chambers on how local farmers will be so negatively impacted by this absurd mega-industrial assembly. We recommend you watch his powerful delegation starting at the 18:15 minute mark:

Recent Media - included articles on the troubles between Wilmot Councillors, how agriculture stands to be impacted in a trade war, and an excellent Letter To The Editor on the dismal job by our governments on the proper protection of farmland:

Mega-Projects Bad For Canada - The group, Canadians For A Sustainable Society have written an excellent article showing the failure of mega-industrial projects and providing hard data for a shift back to a better long-term outcome for Canada - particularly in this new world order. It’s a fascinating article making the case for a far different and more resilient Canadian economy:

WilmotCAN Strategic Planning - Thanks to the thirty three people who spent last Friday afternoon at the Wilmot Civic Action Network Strategic Planning Meeting. It was great to plan out actions and activities for the coming weeks - watch for more details soon. In the meantime please follow the increasingly active social media accounts:

Action Required - Continue to speak up, write elected officials, and make it clear that we are not a willing host.
3) Provincial Election Cooperation and Electoral Reform - Kudos to Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife who make provincial headlines this past week with her openness and honesty about the need for better election outcomes after the results of the recent provincial election where one party gets 100% of the power despite other parties getting more votes.
Hopefully the NDP, Liberal, and Green Party’s will be able to find ways to work together in the future to ensure that election outcomes are more the best public interest:

Action Required - Urge provincial parties to be creative and work together, join organizations such as Cooperate for Canada for better election outcomes.
4) Federal Election Resources - This could be the most important Federal election of your lifetime as we face increasing climate challenges, tariffs, and the entire fate of Canada could hang in the balance of upcoming decisions.
Here’s a list of federal election candidates around much of the Grand River watershed:

5) Aggregates - Following the recent Caledon OLT win against aggressive aggregate mining it is excellent to see the Op-Ed from Sarah Harmer and Doug Tripp on behalf of the Reform Gravel Coalition and North Dumfries Mayor Sue Foxton saying that her municipality has reached its limit of gravel pits. If you know anyone in the North Dumfries Conservation Alliance (NDCA) please encourage them to reach out and join our regular meetings and updates.
6) Bird-Friendly Windows - With Spring migration underway, it is important we do everything possible to reverse the serious decline in birds being seen across North America. 9) Wilmot Cachet MZO Development Returns - It seems that the massive development in Wilmot Township proposed by Cachet Developments in 2021 as an MZO (Ministerial Zoning Order) that sought to bypass proper planning processes and was defeated by overwhelming community opposition has returned again now following proper planning processes. The proposed development appears to have less density, fewer high-rise towers, and more townhouses but will still be an urban development unlike anything ever seen in Wilmot Township before.
There are homes for thousands of people still right next to a highly explosive chemical plant and many other concerns such as Mississauga and Milton-like density, questions about waste-water, and traffic issues. There will be a public meeting coming up on April 7th.

Action Required - Learn more and speak up for the future you want to see in Wilmot and our rural communities.
10) Region of Waterloo Lobbyist Registry - Following the similar actions of a few other Ontario municipalities, the Region of Waterloo has introduced a Lobbyist Registry. While aimed more at professionals charging fees for consulting and lobbying, there are facets that will apply to citizens, volunteers, community groups and others simply speaking up for a better future. We will need to attend upcoming information sessions and learn more to ensure that we are in compliance with these new regulations.

Virtual information sessions will be held on:

13) Other Articles - Includes being detained by the US government, and how Canada can effectively fight Trump with better local Canadian social media and information as we are so quick to give up American food at the grocery store but not American social media as we continue to let Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter dominate our lives:

We can win this hybrid warfare but only if our government helps with information counterattack and the creation of Canadian social media.
14) Tonight! - One Million Neighbours Round Tables - There is still a final Round Table session for the One Million Neighbours initiative. This multisolving session is focussed on Cambridge and rural communities and will be hosted at the rare Charitable Research Reserve. Details are as follows:

15) Good News - Clean Energy Is Expanding Rapidly - The largest nuclear power plants in North America produce about four gigawatts of electricity and that number tapers down quickly as they get smaller. Globally, in 2023, the world deployed that much new wind power about every two weeks.
Today, right now, the world is deploying that much new solar energy every four days!
16) Reminder - Next Meeting - Join us next Friday, April 4th at 5:30pm online at the Zoom link below to discuss the latest:
