Wonderful news! A Habitat Protection Order for the endangered Redside Dace has been issued. The greatest threat to these small but mighty minnows in Ontario is sprawl, especially in Durham Region, and the development of the 413.
The protection order will essentially ban the construction of sprawl and highways throughout Redside Dace critical habitats.
We have this fish in Waterloo Region. It can be used to protect areas here too.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in demanding this protection order. We’ll have to watch closely to ensure that this protection order is enforced. Phil Pothen’s new blog breaks down this key milestone in more detail.

Clashes within Federal-Provincial 413 Working Group
Instead of issuing a federal Impact Assessment of Highway 413, the federal government vowed to work in collaboration with the government of Ontario through a joint 413 Working Group. The working group was created to study and mitigate the impacts of the highway on areas of federal jurisidiction, but reporting in the Narwhal shows that the federal and provincial governments are having trouble finding common ground. Federal authorities say the highway should be re-routed to bypass critical species habitats while the provincial government is holding firm on the proposed route. While the disagreement might continue, the new protection order for the Redside Dace will make it harder for the province to proceed without federal approval.

Greenbelt Erased from Grade 9 Curriculum
For the first time in decades, Ontario’s Grade 9 geography curriculum won’t mention the Greenbelt. The current government clearly doesn’t want to talk about the Greenbelt, but this year marks the mandated ten-year review of the Greenbelt’s boundaries, so we will have to watch extra carefully to see how this review is conducted. And keep talking about the Greenbelt!

Highway 413’s Impact on Farmland
EDC recently wrote a joint Op-Ed with David Suzuki Foundation and the National Union for Farmers about the disastrous impact Highway 413 would have on over 2,000 acres of farmland. Hwy 413 isn’t only bad for biodiversity in Ontario, it will have an equally devastating impact on farmers and our food supply. Under the looming threat of a tariff war with the U.S., preserving our farmland needs to be a top priority.

Snap Election Brings More of the Same
Premier Ford won a third straight majority government last Thursday. The Ontario PC’s lost three seats, dropping from 83 in 2022 to 80 this election. The NDP maintained their position as the official Opposition, with 27 seats. The Liberals regained official party status by winning 14 seats and the Greens held steady at two seats.
We’ve had success contesting individual policies under Premier Ford in the past and we can do it again.
The Narwhal has a detailed breakdown of how the election results will impact different policies.
