Good Day,
The NDP chose to launch their provincial campaign on Thursday in Wilmot with party leader Marit Stiles focusing on the very concerning Wilmot Land Assembly, the Pickering Airport has finally been cancelled after 50 years of fighting for protection, new troubling revelations on Highway #413, the Greenbelt turns 20 with celebrations planned, more than 300 people protest new aggregate mining, High Performance Development Standard Community Workshops announced, and lots of local events to enjoy. Here’s the latest:
1) NDP Launch Provincial Election Campaign in Wilmot - On Thursday afternoon it was great to have NDP Party Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition Marit Stiles back to the proposed Wilmot mega-industrial site where she launched the NDP election campaign promising to protect farmland and ensure better planning processes. More than 80 people and media from across the province assembled in Stewart Snyder’s Red Shed for the announcements and press conference. Extensive media coverage includes:

Action Required - Speak up to ensure that cancelling or relocating this devastating Wilmot Land Assembly to another location is a key election issue. This not only has massive negative impacts for Wilmot and all of Waterloo Region but stands to set dangerous precedents for development across Ontario with no transparency and or proper planning.
2) WilmotCAN Releases 2nd Mini-Documentary - With the first video already receiving well over 10,000 views, the Wilmot Civic Action Network (WilmotCAN) has just released the second part of the mini-documentary series focussed on prime farmland and the impacts its destruction could have to our soverngtiy and food security. 3) A Win For Conservation Half A Century In The Making - Pickering Airport Lands Saved! - It was fantastic to see the federal government announcement on Monday stating that the proposed Pickering Airport lands would finally become part of Rouge National Park as the plans for the huge airport would be cancelled after more than 50 years of environmental and agricultural battles. Congratulations to Land Over Landings and so many groups that fought relentlessly for decades to see these lands protected. Learn more at:

Action Required - We can’t let the Wilmot Land Assembly drag out for half a century…. Speak up to end this government fiasco and ensure our communities aren't compromised and impaired for decades like Pickering has been as these airport lands sat in limbo with no use or purchaser and government failing to plan properly.
4) Highway #413 Breaking News - The Narwhal is reporting that it has learned through recently acquired documents that the Federal government had advised Ontario to reroute Highway #413 around significant species at risk. The need to stop this destructive, expansive, and completely unnecessary highway is greater than ever:
The Narwhal - Federal Government Advised Ontario To Reroute Highway #413:
https://thenarwhal.ca/highway-413-working-group-reroute/
Action Required - Keep speaking up against Highway #413, the billions of taxpayer dollars Doug Ford is about to waste on the destruction of parts of the Greenbelt and so many headwaters areas.
5) Greenbelt Scandal Fallout Continues - The Ontario Liberals have asked the RCMP to provide an update on the provincial Greenbelt scandal investigation that has dragged on for years in advance of the provincial election as the findings of the investigation could be highly relevant to the election. Required Actions - The Ontario election campaign is only four weeks long - make the most of every day to ensure the best possible outcomes.
10) Recent Articles - Include more record low home sales down over 80% with dire predictions for the housing crisis as Doug Ford’s urban sprawl focus is a dismal failure, new development proposed for Kitchener’s long contested Hidden Valley, an innovative idea to combine a Fire Station and affordable housing in Kitchener, and the latest on the Paris Library project:

11) WRCE High Performance Development Standards Information Sessions - The Waterloo Region Community Energy (WRCE) is holding pubic information sessions on their proposed building standards. Come to learn more and share your thoughts on building better buildings and more resilient, efficient communities. Given that more than 40% of our carbon footprint comes from buildings and design of our communities, making significant improvements will be essential in addressing climate change. These standards have been years in the making and could help influence energy use, building construction, new EV adoption, tree planing, and water efficiency.
Events we need strong public engagement at are as follows:
Wednesday, February 5th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm - Cambridge, Cambridge City Hall, Bowman Room - https://www.engagewr.ca/high-performance-development-standards

You can also learn more and engage online at: https://www.engagewr.ca/high-performance-development-standards
Action Required - These Green Development Standards that will build more efficient and comfortable homes that use far less energy and are far cheaper to run are facing considerable push-back from certain developers and builder lobby groups. Speak up for the better future we need and help ensure Waterloo Region is building better buildings and communities like other cities such as Toronto, Markham, Mississauga, and even rural communities like King Township and Halton Hills already are.

There was strong support from other elected officials including the Mayors of Milton, Caledon, Burlington, and Puslinch. Watch the excellent television coverage featuring Mike Balkwill:
