Good Day,

New polling from WilmotCAN shows election trouble for Mike Harris Jr. as a majority of constituents won’t vote for a candidate supporting the proposed Wilmot Mega-Industrial Site, polling also shows a clear majority of residents want Wilmot Township to pass a resolution stating they are an Unwilling Host. Join a Community Town Hall Meeting on Thursday evening (tonight!) to learn more about the polling results and next steps the community will be taking. Also, there is lots of election news as party leaders are making more campaign stops across the Grand River watershed and there are lots of new election resources.

Here’s the latest:

1) WilmotCAN Municipal and Provincial Surveys Show Massive Concern & Election Troubles - Late last week Wilmot Civic Action Network (WilmotCAN) released polling by Pallas Data done in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding including Wilmot Township focussed on municipal issues showing strong opposition to the proposed mega-industrial land assembly and a clear majority wanting Wilmot Council to declare it is an Unwilling Host. Results included:

	- By a ratio of 3:1 Wilmot residents definitely will not vote or are less likely to vote for a Councillor who supports the proposed expropriation,
	- Only 5% of Wilmot residents said that they would very likely vote for a candidate who supports the proposed expropriation,
	- Less than 12% of respondents felt our governments have adequately consulted on the mega-site proposal,
	- A strong majority of nearly 6 out of 10 respondents in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding think elected officials should be not be bound by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Provincial Survey - Yesterday, WilmotCAN released polling done by Pallas Data focussed on provincial issues that shows serious election trouble ahead for Mike Harris Jr. as a majority of constituents won’t for vote for a candidate supporting the proposed Wilmot mega-industrial development. Key findings from the poll include:

	- Across the Kitchener-Conestoga riding, 67% of voters said that they would definitely not vote or might not vote for a candidate who supports the proposed expropriation in the provincial election,
	- Just 14% of voters said that they might vote or definitely will vote for a candidate who supports the proposed farmland expropriation,
	- A staggering 83% of voters in Wilmot Township said that they definitely would not vote or might not vote for a candidate who supports the proposed expropriation in the provincial election,
	- Things get even worse for Conservative MPP Mike Harris Jr. as 57% of voters who identify as Conservative said that they definitely would not or might not vote for a provincial candidate who supports the proposed expropriation,
	- Just 21% of Conservatives said they might vote or definitely would vote for a candidate supporting the industrial mega-site,
	- In Wilmot Township 66% of residents said that they do not trust MPP Mike Harris Jr. to represent their interests with only 22% stating they somewhat trust or strongly trust Mike Harris Jr. to represent their interests,
	- Astoundingly 38% of Conservatives in Kitchener-Conestoga stated they don’t trust their own Conservative MPP Mike Harris Jr. to represent the interests of Wilmot residents – rising to 86% of NDP supporters and 89% of those who identity as Liberals expressing concerns about trust of Mike Harris Jr.

Tonight! WilmotCAN Town Hall Meeting - A Community Town Hall Meeting and information session will be held by WilmotCAN to discuss survey results, the impacts of the proposed land assembly, and next steps:

2) Wilmot Land Assembly Continues To Make Election Headlines - Every major provincial party leader, except Doug Ford stands with Wilmot’s farming families and concerned citizens against the Wilmot mega-industrial land assembly. Unfortunately, Doug Ford seems to believe that the destruction of our agricultural lands should have began 20 years ago:

More Candidates in Kitchener-Conestoga - The New Blue Party and the Ontario Party have each announced candidates that could help siphon votes from Mike Harris Jr.

Fantastic Op-Ed by Fight For Farmland’s Susanna Compton - Kudos to Susanna who had an excellent Op-Ed published in the KW Record on Monday about the huge negative impacts the Wilmot Land Assembly would have on farms across Waterloo Region and beyond. Read her excellent article and then write your own Op-Ed on what concerns you with this absurd development proposal:

Election Help Needed - There are several parties in ridings in the Grand River Watershed that are eagerly looking for volunteers to help with campaigns where there is a good chance of electing candidates who are going to be far more progressive and offer policies more in the best public interest than what we have seen from the provincial Conservative government. Please reach out to parties including the Green Party in Wellington-Halton Hills, the Liberal Party in Cambridge, and the NDP Party in several area rural ridings where there is a particularly good chance of change. In Brantford-Brant it looks like NDP candidate Harvey Bischof has the best chance to win with co-operation. Helping by making phone calls, door knocking, getting people to the polls, and other simple activities could make all the difference in close races. Please do what you can over the next couple of weeks to get better electoral outcomes:

Required Actions - The Ontario election campaign is only four weeks long - make the most of every day to ensure the best possible outcomes.

5) Cooperate For Canada - Cooperate for Canada has published a list of Unity Candidates in a group of key ridings across the watershed and the province as a result of the efforts of very dedicated volunteers - including an enthusiastic group in the Grand River Watershed chapter led by Kae Elgie.

A Unity Candidate is the candidate most likely to win or retain a seat for the Liberal, NDP, Green Party, or an Independent identified using a combination of polling analysis, electoral history, campaign priorities and strength, as well as interviews with as many candidates as possible.

You may recall C4C’s cooperation strategy involves strategic voting - voting for the Unity Candidates and urging citizens to support campaigns with donations - financial and time - if possible. An unfortunate part of election history for many rIdings across the Grand River watershed, across the province (and the country) is the progressive vote gets split between the NDP, Liberal, and Green parties. It is a flaw of the first-past-the-post voting system.

C4C continues to urge the NDP, Liberals and Greens to cooperate, to step back, and to enable the Unity Candidates to oppose the PCs in order to prevent vote splitting. For those candidates behind in the polls we urge them to make the brave choice. Where there are extremely close races between progressive parties, this is particularly important.

Also, remember that $200 bribe cheque from the province? One option is to donate part or all of it to help support a Unity Candidate in your Riding or another Riding.

Action Required - Learn more about the cooperation strategy for Ontario and find your local Unity Candidate in the list on the Cooperate for Canada website:

7) Election Debates In The Grand River Watershed Area - Plan to attend upcoming events:

Kitchener-Conestoga Election Debate - Thursday, February 20th at 7:00pm an all-candidates debate (if Conservative MPP Mike Harris Jr. breaks party rules and shows up) for Kitchener-Conestoga at the Wilmot Rod & Gun Club. Details are as follows and in the poster below in Appendix D):

Date: Thursday, January 20th at 7:00pm
Location: Wilmot Rod & Gun Club, 2607 Bleams Road just three minutes from Baden

Wellington-Halton Hills - While two debates were planned for Wellington-Halton Hills, they have both been cancelled. Both the Canadian Federation of University Women Georgetown and the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce had arranged for debates but have cancelled their events after PC Party candidate Joseph Racinsky declined the groups' invitations. The Chamber of Commerce will now host a "meet and greet". You can read more about it below:

Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis is pushing for amalgamation, trying to make it an issue in provincial election.

9) Greenbelt Scandal Continues To Return - There’s more news stories on the Ford government top staffers have been accused of trying to sell access to developers and getting lands fast-tracked for development approval. The interesting twist this time is that it is developers themselves raising the concerns complaining that they didn’t get the promised approvals and “lobbying services” they were owed and had paid for:

Canada’s National Observer - Greenbelt Scandal Returns To Haunt Ford Ahead Of Election:
	https://www.nationalobserver.com/2025/02/07/news/ford-greenbelt-linked-lawsuit

Action Required - We need to speak up and demand better of government. Too many decisions like Ontario Place, the Science Centre, the Wilmot Land Assembly, the Greenbelt scandal, the forced boundary expansions in Waterloo Region and elsewhere have no transparency, no data or rationale, no proper public processes and too many unanswered questions such as how were all these lands chosen or decisions made against the greater public good.

10) Climate Crisis Overshadowed - Leave it to amazing Candian author and journalist Gwynne Dyer to call out how Trump’s craziness and devastation is distracting the world from rapidly warming temperatures rising faster than anyone can explain. This is a really good article worth your time to read:

11) Election Actions You Need To Be Undertaking:

	(1) Vote. This goes without saying. You can’t influence the outcome if you don’t vote. If you have voted previously and haven’t changed your name and haven’t moved you should already be on the voting Register. You should confirm, update or add your information to the Register by February 17 to receive your voting card in the mail:

	https://www.elections.on.ca/en.html

On Election Day, if you are on the Register, you need to present one piece of ID showing your name to vote. If you are not on the Register, you must present one piece of ID showing both your name and home address to vote.

	(2) Get others to vote. Physically go with your friends and family to their polling location. Text other people and encourage them to vote. Post online that you voted.

	(3) To order a lawn sign, Google: "Ontario (your choice) Party”

	(4) Make a donation. Did you know that thanks to generous tax credits, you can get up to 75% back when you make a political donation to a candidate or party?

	(5) Follow the news, listen to podcasts, and watch the debates (if any) to learn more about the political parties. Then, talk to your friends and family about campaign issues.

	(6) Check out events on the party websites and attend an event in your area.

	(7) Volunteer! There’s no better way of getting involved in an election than being part of the action directly. From putting up signs to literature drops to calling members to canvassing, there are a wide variety of jobs that campaigns always need help with. There’s something for everyone regardless of your time commitment, interest, and skills. You can sign up directly to help with one of the campaign’s by going to the party’s website.

Given that more than 40% of our carbon footprint comes from buildings and design of our communities, making significant improvements will be essential in addressing climate change. These standards have been years in the making and could help influence energy use, building construction, new EV adoption, tree planing, and water efficiency.

Events we need strong public engagement at are as follows:

You can also learn more and engage online at: https://www.engagewr.ca/high-performance-development-standards

Action Required - These Green Development Standards that will build more efficient and comfortable homes that use far less energy and are far cheaper to run are facing considerable push-back from certain developers and builder lobby groups. Speak up for the better future we need and help ensure Waterloo Region is building better buildings and communities like other cities such as Toronto, Markham, Mississauga, and even rural communities like King Township and Halton Hills already are.

K) We Can’t Afford Ford By Susan Koswan:

Hard as it is to look away from the train wreck in US politics, we must focus on our own in Ontario. By wasting billions on cancelled contracts, legal fees and more, he is laying waste to environmental protection, climate action, and a healthier and better educated population.
A sample of why Ford has to go on February 27:

Economy

· $1.4 billion to cancel beer store contracts and expand beer and liquor sales into a larger marketplace

· $230 million to cancel clean energy contracts

· $1.1 billion lost revenue cancelling vehicle license fees

· $2 billion dollars plus on Ontario Place redevelopment plans that were not “fair, transparent or accountable”

· $4.3 million in legal fees plus $4.1 billion in backpay for Bill 124, ruled unconstitutional by the Ontario Court of Appeal

· $103.5 million on advertising, $63.7 million of which was ads to “promote the governing party.”

· $19.4 billion - the largest contingency fund in Ontario history

· $145.3 million plus for this election

· $3 billion for the $200/person “rebate” of our own money

Ontario Healthcare

· “Hallway medicine” increased, now averaging 2000/people/day in the province

· 400 emergency room closures in 2022/23

· "Since Doug Ford took office in 2018, the number of nurses leaving the system has increased every year…For every 10 nurses this government says have been hired, six have left." Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) Provincial President Erin Ariss <https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/ontario-nurses-association-celebrates-second-bill-124-legal-victory-as-ford-government-loses-its-appeal-of-earlier-decision-815337369.html>, RN

· Hospital and long term care staffing shortages met by increased reliance on for-profit agencies at double and sometimes triple the cost with no salary cap

· Long term care lacking “fully effective systems and procedures to ensure that residents receive quality care and services.”

Environment

· Repealed all protective environmental and climate change legislation

· Violated Environmental Bill of Rights multiple times

· Excessive use of Ministerial Zoning Orders (MZOs) ignoring local planning and environmental assessments

· Tripled <https://www.cleanairalliance.org/campaigns/gas/> energy from polluting gas-power plants since 2017

· Financially backing the contentious Wilmot land assembly

· $48 million to remove Toronto bike lanes

Housing

· Legislative changes that deepened the housing crisis with increased urban sprawl, destruction of farmland, new highway plans, and unaffordable rent due to multiple loopholes <https://policyalternatives.ca/sites/default/files/uploads/publications/Ontario%20Office/2024/04/rent-control-in-ontario.pdf>
· Greenbelt scandal, still under RCMP investigation. “Owners of the 15 land sites removed from the Greenbelt could ultimately see a collective $8.3 billion increase to the value of their properties.”

Education

· “Public schools are receiving $1,500 less per student compared to 2018, when the Ford government was first elected.” Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario <https://www.etfo.ca/news-publications/media-releases/fall-economic-statement-2024>
Culture

· Shuttered and demolished Ontario Science Centre against government’s own expert advice <https://www.canadianarchitect.com/the-true-cost-of-repairing-the-ontario-science-centre-is-much-much-less-than-what-infrastructure-ontario-has-been-saying-and-the-proof-is-in-its-own-documents/>
· Privatizing Ontario Place, including clearcutting 800 trees, and threatening and displacing local wildlife and ecosystems with sewage overflow plan

On top of it, Doug Ford is “100 percent happy” about Trump getting re-elected, and trash-talking how electing Liberal Bonnie Crombie or NDP Marit Styles would be “an absolute disaster.”

We can’t ignore what the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario <https://www.auditor.on.ca/en/content/annualreports/arbyyear/ar2024.html>, Financial Accountability Office of Ontario <https://fao-on.org/en/report/2024-25-expenditure-monitor-q2/>, Ontario Federation of Labour’s Ford Tracker <https://ofl.ca/ford-tracker/>, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario’s Policy and Political Action <https://rnao.ca/policy>, and Environmental Defence Protecting Ontario’s Environment <https://environmentaldefence.ca/campaign/protecting-ontarios-environment/> are telling us.

If any or all of this resonates with you, take the pledge—both provincial and federal—with Cooperate for Canada <https://cooperateforcanada.ca/voting-pledges/> to find the Unity Candidate in your riding.
