The federal election this Monday April 28th is dominating a lot of the news but there are many other things going on including the Region of Waterloo destroying farmland and groundwater on the 25th anniversary of Walkerton, Bill 5 repealing the Endangered Species Act, Toronto bike lane removals being paused by court orders, more Greenbelt coverup/scandal, and more!

Here’s the latest:

2) Region of Waterloo Destroys Topsoil, Farm, and Wilmot Waterways - Soil conservation expert Anne Loeffler and WilmotCAN are raising concerns about the horrific soil erosion that has taken place on the 160 acre property the Region purchased in 2024 as part of the absurd Wilmot mega-industrial land assembly. This is the same farm property where the Region destroyed the massive corn crop last summer just a few weeks before it would have been ready to harvest and could have produced as much as 2.5 million boxes of cereal.

The Region completely ignored Anne’s detailed letter warning them last autumn about the lack of any necessary cover crop after the corn was shredded, the erosion already happening, and the need to better protect irreplaceable topsoil and not contaminate important water sources other nearby farms depend on. Instead, no action was taken, fields have remained barren for 9 months now and there is severe loss of soil, with the runoff of massive amounts of silt and soil into area drains and nearby waterways, contaminating the Nith and the Grand Rivers while the land has been severely damaged.

Anne had an excellent delegation to the Region of Waterloo Council on Wednesday, and the story was front page news in the Waterloo Record. This is an urgent matter, as every rainfall and even windy day will cause further damage and precious soil loss.

Meanwhile downstream the City of Brantford, which relies on the Grand River has recently announced they have installed expensive temporary filtration equipment to try improve their drinking water quality. Six Nations of the Grand River also sources their drinking water from the Grand River and recently initiated a lawsuit against the federal government regarding their inadequate access to clean drinking water:

3) 25th Anniversary Of Walkerton Water Crisis - It’s been 25 years since the Walkerton water crisis sickened thousands of people, numerous citizens were killed and otthers permanently disabled from the contaminated water and improperly maintained treatment plant due to provincial government cuts. Brock Township has decided on a series of self-directed events:

4) Bill 5 Continues To Horrify - As we learn more about Bill 5 the “Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act” proposed on the eve of the Good Friday holiday by the Ford government, it will not only create very concerning lawless Economic Zones at the government’s whim, it will also fully repeal Ontario’s Endangered Species Act for the entire province that was once heralded as world-leading. The entire current ESA will be replaced with far weaker regulations gutting protections and allowing development to override habitat protection and restoration efforts.

There are 22% more species at risk in 2020 than 2009. We need to do better - not worse. Learn more:

5) Court Halts Bike Lane Removals - The Ontario Superior Court has ordered a halt to any removal of Toronto Bike Lanes on Bloor St, Yonge St, and University Ave, in Toronto until the court can decide if the plan to remove them is unconstitutional. This is an important first step and victory in the battle to see this important cycling and safety infrastructure remain in place:

6) Yet More Greenbelt Scandal - Once again more Ford senior staffers are being asked by the provincial government to hand over any Greenbelt related e-mails and records they may have on personal devices upon orders from the Information and Privacy Commissioner - this is on top of the e-mails requested last week by the IPC:

10) End Energy Separatism - The Clean Air Alliance has launched an excellent campaign urging the Ford government to reject US fracked gas and fossil fuels that Ontario has become dependent on over the past ten years and instead better utilize clean Canadian energy, wind, solar, and storage.

The provincial government has responded with the Protect Ontario Through Free Trade Within Canada Act which will require Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to open up procurements for new electricity supply to renewable power projects in Manitoba and Quebec.
