Good Day!
In a surprise move Doug Ford gives undemocratic Strong Mayor Powers to 169 more municipalities, the federal election heats up, Cachet Development gets strong feedback at Wilmot Council meeting, Grand River Transit announces a fantastic 10 year expansion plan, speak up on the ERO about aggregates, and more!
Here’s the latest:
1) Ford Government Gives Strong Mayor Powers To Another 169 Municipalities - In a surprise move that was not part of any recent election platform, Premier Doug Ford has announced that very undemocratic Strong Mayor Powers will be given to another 169 municipalities in Ontario even though most of them never even asked for them.
This isn’t how democracy works - less than 50% is not a majority and if a majority of elected officials can’t come to a concensus on something it likely isn’t in the best public interest. Already the abuse of these powers is apparent in Orillia where instead of responding to an overwhelming ice storm the Mayor replaced top staff without the knowledge or support of Council.

Interesting to Wilmot Township specifically mentioned in this Trillium Article out of the the 168 other municipalities.

Fair Vote Canada - Doug Ford’s Move To Concentrate Power With Strong Mayor System A Step Backwards For Local Democracy:
https://www.fairvote.ca/22/07/2022/doug-fords-move-to-concentrate-power-with-strong-mayor-system-a-step-backward-for-local-democracy/
Most insightful are these excerpts from the Fair Vote Canada article:
"At just the moment when even the Economist’s Democracy Intelligence Unit is warning <https://www.fairvote.ca/2022/02/14/economist-democracy-index-and-freedom-convoy-challenges-canada-to-build-an-inclusive-democracy-or-slide-into-american-style-problems/>about Canada’s slide towards US-style political problems, Ford seems hell bent on Americanizing our municipal politics.
The plan to strip local city councillors of decision-making power and hand it to a “strong mayor” is not something Ford campaigned on before he won his latest “majority” (with the backing of 19% of eligible voters).
The “strong mayor” may be the lobbyist’s dream. After all, it’s easier to get a single individual in your pocket than to win a majority of the city council’s support for your plan. It’s no surprise that US research <https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/puar.13050>analyzing corruption in municipal politics showed that cities using the “council-manager model” (like Toronto) had 57% less corruption than those with a “mayor-council” model (which included cities with “strong mayors”)."
Action Required - There is one week to provide feedback to the provincial government using this easy to complete online form at:

3) Wilmot Cachet Development Council Meeting - The massive development in Wilmot Township proposed by Cachet Developments in 2021 as an MZO (Ministerial Zoning Order) that sought to bypass proper planning processes and was defeated by strong community opposition came back to Wilmot Council on Monday night - this time thankfully using the proper planning processes.
The proposed development is much improved from before with almost half the number of units, fewer high-rise towers, and more townhouses but will still be an urban development unlike anything ever seen in Wilmot Township before, adding over 1,800 people or almost 10% to the population of New Hamburg in a single 46 acre development.
There will be homes for thousands of people right next to a highly concerning chemical plant and many other issues such as Mississauga and Milton-like density, questions about waste-water, and traffic issues. Learn more:

6) WilmotCAN Third Mini-Documentary Video - The third video about the Region of Waterloo’s secretive Wilmot mega-industrial land assembly continues to gain traction and get rave reviews. This video highlights how the site only meets 7 of 44 of the government’s own critera, the massive infrastructure costs facing taxpayers to service such a remote site where no development has ever been contemplated, and the potential damage to the land and water supply that hundreds of thousands of people rely on.
