Good Day,

This week brings yet another revelation in the Greenbelt Scandal from the Integrity Commissioner, WilmotCAN releases the third mini-documentary video on the price we will all pay for the mega-industrial land assembly, GRCA continues secret land disposition, a huge win for the Middlebrook water well after many years, the Wilmot Cachet Development comes to Council on Monday, and the Federal Election continues. Join us at 5:30pm today (Friday) to discuss and learn more:

Join us today. Friday, April 3rd at 5:30pm:

Here’s the latest:

1) Breaking News Again - Greenbelt Scandal Continues! In yet another announcement from the provincial Integrity Commissioner, a former aide to Premier Doug Ford has been accused of contravening several Ontario laws - in particular with lobbying and disclosures in an attempt to get approvals for developers.

Unfortunately, there is almost no penalties for the former government employee who faces no sanctions and can continue to lobby the provincial government. Also, the Integrity Commissioner J. David Wake has recently retired and Premier Doug Ford has yet to announce any successor.

The Integrity Commissioner's office did confirm that it continues to investigate other former top staff of Doug Ford including his principal secretary and opposition party leaders made numerous comments about the corruption of the Ford government, the ongoing RCMP Greenbelt investigation, and that Doug Ford simply can’t be trusted with the Greenbelt.

Learn more in the following articles:

Here’s also a related article about the lack of environmental qualifications of the new Environment Minister:

And of course the similarities and parallels between the Greenbelt Scandal and the Wilmot Land Grab continue as well.

2) WilmotCAN Releases Third Mini-Documentary Video - On Thursday, the Wilmot Civic Action Network (WilmotCAN) released the third video about the Region of Waterloo’s secretive land assembly for the extreme concerning 770 acre industrial mega-site in rural Wilmot Township. This video highlights how the site only meets 7 of 44 of the government’s own critera, the massive infrastructure costs facing taxpayers to service such a remote site where no development has ever been contemplated, and the potential damage to the land and water supply that hundreds of thousands of people rely on.

The first two videos have been viewed by almost 50,000 people and continue to get strong reviews.

Action Required - Watch the video, share it with others, continue to speak up, write elected officials, and make it clear that we are not a willing host.

Action Required - Get involved and speak out for the needed outcomes you would like to see in this election.

4) GRCA Land Disposition - Last Friday, March 28th - the GRCA board held a closed meeting to consider the fate of up to seven land holdings accounting for approximately 30 acres for disposition. The properties are located in Galt, Brantford, Inverhaugh, Guelph, and Rockwood. If the GRCA proceeds with the staff recommendations, board members will be voting for short-term financial gains leading to an impoverished legacy for future generations of Grand River watershed residents.

A big thanks to everyone that responded to the call to action to send the letter prepared by Environmental Defence. As of this morning 163 letters had been received by GRCA board members from the public urging the GRCA not to sell conservation land!

Since it was a closed in-camera meeting we still don’t know the outcome but we encourage you to take a minute to send this letter if you haven’t already:

	https://act.environmentaldefence.ca/page/168626/action/1

Action Required - Speak up now to urge the GRCA not to sell off our green space and instead increase protected lands.

5) MiddleBrook Well Acquired! - In a huge victory for water, Centre Wellington Township has successfully acquired the MiddleBrook Well from Triiton Water Holdings. Mayor Watters stated that securing this well is a critical step for ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of the community and protecting the future of residents:

	https://www.waterwatchers.ca/

Congratulations to everyone who has fought for years to see this well be transferred to public ownership instead of seeing water being sold off for profit by private bottlers.

6) Wilmot Cachet MZO Development Returns - The massive development in Wilmot Township proposed by Cachet Developments in 2021 as an MZO (Ministerial Zoning Order) that sought to bypass proper planning processes and was defeated by overwhelming community opposition will be returning again now following proper planning processes to Wilmot Township Council on Monday. The proposed development is much improved from before with almost half the number of units, fewer high-rise towers, and more townhouses but will still be an urban development unlike anything ever seen in Wilmot Township before, adding over 1,800 people or almost 10% to the population of New Hamburg in a single 46 acre development.

There will be homes for thousands of people right next to a highly concerning chemical plant and many other issues such as Mississauga and Milton-like density, questions about waste-water, and traffic issues. Learn more:

7) Cooperate For Canada - Please continue to help Cooperate For Canada ensure better election outcomes where a single party doesn’t get 100% of the power with only a minority of votes - particularly when one of the primary parties is proposing so many Trump-like polices and actions against essential climate change solutions. Action Required - Get involved, speak up, and ensure the best possible outcomes in this critical federal election that will determine the fate of our country for generations.

8) North Dumfries Aggregate Mining Crisis - North Dumfries Township already has the greatest percentage of lands (over 10%) under aggregate extraction in Ontario with more than 46 gravel pits - far more than is needed to supply the area. However, there are still applications for more. Please help to support the North Dumfries Conservation Alliance. They have set-up a Small Change Fund at:

11) Region of Waterloo Lobbyist Registry - Following the similar actions of a few other Ontario municipalities, the Region of Waterloo has introduced a Lobbyist Registry.
