Good Day!

The provincial government has rammed Bill 212 through the Legislature expediting devastating highways while destroying essential bike lanes, the Fight For Farmland continues with great delegations and parades in Wilmot, some good news with the Region of Waterloo surpassing Affordable Housing goals, the City of Waterloo’s visionary Official Plan comes for final approval on Monday, and lots of events around the Grand River watershed.

Join us on Zoom tonight at 5:30pm to discuss and learn more:

Here’s the latest:

1) Bill 212 Rushed Through Legislature - Doing everything possible to curtail debate and opportunities for feedback, while also exempting proper due diligence and environmental assessments for the unnecessary and devastating Highway #413, the Ford government pushed Bill 212 through the Legislature earlier this week. This bill is devastating for Ontario with dangerous new precedents being set for expropriation, overriding individual rights and private property laws, and eliminating proper planning as well as due legal process.

There has been a ton of media coverage including:

Environmental Defence issued a great media statement stating the overwhelming case for re-instating the federal government’s Impact Assessment:

	3) Attend the upcoming Guelph Climate Action Network (GCAN) and Seniors For Climate Action Now (SCAN) event - Why Highway #413 Is Our Road To Ruin - Ontario At A Crossroads with speaker Mike Marcolongo. Details are as follows:

Date: Tuesday, December 3rd from 7pm to 9pm
Location: artBar, 37 Quebec Street, Upper Level, downtown Guelph
Learn more in the poster attached below.

	4) Keep speaking up to elected officials and demand better.

2) Fight For Farmland - Media coverage continued this week with Waterloo Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Tony Lamantia saying he laughed when he heard US President-elect Trump’s comments about implementing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. What is not so humorous is the farmers impacted by the Wilmot land assembly plan that have been left in limbo for over 9 months. The farmers need certainty. Waterloo’s Regional Planning authority will cease in January 2025, many questions are left unanswered.

Wilmot Delegation - On Monday night Wilmot resident Katie Honek gave an incredible delegation at Wilmot Council calling out parallels between the regular land acknowledgment at each Council meeting and the lack of action or response to widespread community concerns on the proposed Wilmot mega-industrial site. Santa Claus Parades - Join us this weekend for the Fight For Farmland float in area Santa Claus parades. A volunteer team has done a great job of decorating Stewart Snyder's hay wagon as a float, Stratford Farm Equipment is supplying a fully decorated tractor, and we will be in the following parades this weekend:

	- The Baden Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, November 30th at 12pm,

	- The New Hamburg Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, December 1st at 6:00pm.

Upcoming Council Meetings - Join us at the next Region of Waterloo Council meeting on Wednesday, December 11th at 6:30pm where we will have delegations speaking on the Wilmot Land Assembly. and also on Monday, December 16th at the Township of Wilmot where we will have at least one delegation for the Fight For Farmland. Also, If you can add your voice and speak up at either of these upcoming meetings please register to speak with the Wilmot Clerk at clerks at wilmot.ca <mailto:clerks at wilmot.ca> and/or the Regional Clerk at regionalclerk at regionofwaterloo.ca <mailto:regionalclerk at regionofwaterloo.ca>.

Region of Waterloo Council Meeting: 150 Fredrick Street East, Kitchener - Wednesday, December 11th - Council Meeting starts at 7:00pm

Wilmot Township Council: 60 Snyder’s Road West, Baden - Monday, December 16th - Council Meeting starts at 7:00 pm

Action Required - Attend upcoming events, and call or write elected officials at Wilmot Township, the Region of Waterloo and the provincial government and tell them to finally abandon this absurd Wilmot Industrial Mega-site location - that we are an UNWILLING community, the landowners have made it clear they are UNWILLING, and a better plan is needed.

3) Waterloo Region Surpasses Affordable Housing Goal - Despite lower than ever provincial housing starts and the ongoing housing crisis being perpetuated by the Ford government, it is great to see the Region of Waterloo surpassing its target for new affordable housing with over 2,707 affordable homes being created as part of the Building Better Futures plan. 5) City of Waterloo Official Plan Update Final Approval on Monday, Dec 2nd - After years of efforts, the updated City of Waterloo Official Plan is coming to Council on Monday night for final approval of Phase 1 and progression onto Phase 2. This excellent Official Plan should be the model for communities across Canada with a focus on a low carbon and green resilient city. This includes zero boundary expansion with all growth within existing boundaries and growing up not out for thousands of new homes and businesses. There is a strong focus on core growth, public transit, active transportation, and liveability for everyone.

There’s lots to like so please speak up and show your support to a municipality doing so many things right (Councillor contact information at the bottom of this e-mail). Also, please encourage other municipalities to learn from and model this excellent Official Plan that will be more important than ever as the Region of Waterloo loses Planning Authority and these lower-tier Official Plans become the only future plans for our communities.

9) Fergus Battery Storage Concerns - Kudos to Donna McCaw and others who have been following issues around battery storage facilities being constructed at a rapid pace with little oversight in Ontario. Despite the need for a cleaner, more resilient power grid this certainly isn’t the best use for prime farmland. Learn more and help find better solutions at:

10) Nuclear Waste Repository Decision - The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has announced that their preferred site for a nuclear waste repository is a location near Ignace, Ontario. This means that the South Bruce/Teeswater site is out of contention but a fight is brewing in Northern Ontario. Kudos to the local sheep, goat, and dairy farmers who lead the fight in South Bruce for what was supposed to be a “done deal”.

11) Norfolk County Farmland Protection - It’s fantastic to see an innvoative program being considered by Norfolk County that would reward developers with lower development charges for more sustainable building within existing urban areas where existing infrastructure can be utilized instead of destroying farmland for unsustainable sprawl. 13) Grand River Conservation Authority Concerns - There continues to be much concern about the potential sale of the Niska lands by the GRCA. Kudos to local activists and citizens who are pursuing Freedom Of Information Requests to get all the relevant details. We will discuss this issue further on Friday at 5:30pm as more details become available.

14) Auditor General Reports To Be Released - This coming week the Auditor General will be releasing reports on Ontario’s opioid strategy, the immigrant nominee program, Ontario Place, MZO’s. and other sensitive topics for Doug Ford’s provincial government.

We’ll have to see what the Auditor General has to say. We are also still optimistic the AG will agree to undertake the Value-For-The-Money Audit that the NDP has requested for the Wilmot Land Assembly.

15) Climate Emergency Vigil This Friday! - This Friday, November 29th, Faith Climate Justice Waterloo Region will be hosting a public climate emergency vigil in Waterloo Public Square, free for all to attend. These vigils build on the power of the 16 vigils hosted last fall, and are designed to create sacred spaces to process complex climate emotions together, to reflect, and to share opportunities for action. Spread the word and we hope you will join us. For more information see the poster attached below or visit:

16) Greta At COP29 In Baku - A few days ago, Greta Thunberg said:

As the COP29 climate meeting reaches its end, it should not come as a surprise that yet another COP is failing. The current draft is a complete disaster. But even if our expectations are close to non-existent, we must never find ourselves reacting to these continuous betrayals with anything but rage.

The people in power are again about to agree to a death sentence to the countless people whose lives have been or will be ruined by the climate crisis. The current text is full of false solutions and empty promises. The money from the Global North countries needed to pay back their climate debt is still nowhere to be seen. The host country, Azerbaijan, is a repressive and authoritarian petrostate that has committed ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts towards Armenians. Civil society present at COP29 are being silenced, yet continue fighting and pushing negotiators towards the bare minimum.

All of this while oppression, inequalities, wars, and genocides all over the world continue to intensify. Those in power are worsening the destabilization and destruction of our life-supporting ecosystems. We are on track to experience the hottest year ever recorded, with global greenhouse gases reaching an all-time high just last year.

It is clear that the current systems are not working in our favor. The COP processes aren’t just failing us, they are part of a larger system built on injustice and designed to sacrifice current and future generations for the opportunity of a few to keep making unimaginable profits and to continue exploiting planet and people.

With every negotiation, with every speech made by a world leader, and with every agreement they sign, it becomes clear that it is up to us as a global collective to take the action we so desperately need, and to show where the leadership truly lies. They are not going to do it for us, as this COP29 yet again proves.

Lets continue to speak up and demand better.
