Here’s the latest:
1) Wilmot Industrial Mega-Site Fight For Farmland - Town Hall Meetings - Despite competing with the Game 7 finals of the Stanley Cup, it was incredible to see an even larger attendance at Monday’s Fight For Farmland Town Hall meeting than the week before. It was a scramble to set-up even more chairs as so many concerned citizens filled the New Hamburg Community Centre to learn more and ask questions about this proposed industrial mega-site.
The concern in the community is considerable as the negative impacts will be so far-reaching and so many important questions remain unanswered. Everyone is urged to write and call their elected officials to urge Wilmot Councillors to represent their citizens as they were elected to do and state that Wilmot is an unwilling host. We also need to tell Regional Council and MPPs to abandon this absurd location for the largest industrial development in the history of our Region and locate it much closer to the urban cities, major infrastructure, rail lines, and multiple highways where this sort of development has always been anticipated and would be welcomed:

If you were unable to attend the Town Hall Meetings you can download the PowerPoint presentation and soon should be able to watch a video of the presentations at: www.fightforfarmland.com
Wilmot Protests - it was also fantastic to see protesters outnumbering the attendees at the Wilmot Nith River Promenade Trail Opening on Monday. Thanks to the New Hamburg Dominoes Pizzeria who provided fresh free pizza and drinks for Fight For Farmland protestors. Unfortunately, MPP Mike Harris Jr. was a no show at the event though a strong message was still sent to the elected officials present by all the Fight For Farmland signs and support from passing cars honking.
Kudos also to the protesters who rallied on Monday night outside of the Wilmot Council meeting again receiving strong support from passing motorists to send a strong message to Wilmot Council that we are unwilling. Some citizens even stayed until the end of the meeting with flashlights and lawn chairs to ensure that our determination and persistence is visible firsthand to Councillors as they left the meeting.
Regional Council Presentation - the fantastic presentation that Susanna Compton gave at Regional Council has been shared more than 50 times on Facebook and watched hundreds of times online. Check it out at:

Action Required - Please continue to speak up and show firsthand that we are unwilling!
2) GRCA Land Sell-Off - It’s great to see so many citizens and groups speaking up about the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Surplus Lands Inventory Staff Report last week identifying lands to be sold off to meet Doug Ford’s absurd Bill 23 December deadline to identify green space to be sold for destruction for new housing development.
We are still struggling to understand how any Conservation Authority Lands can be declared surplus and sold for destruction and development in a climate crisis - particularly when it’s broadly agreed that we have already have sufficient lands already designated for development. After the criticism and outrage Doug Ford has faced for trying to sell off parts of the Greenbelt to developers, it is astounding that he is still requiring Conservation Authorities to sell off their green space to developers.
Despite the GRCA Staff Report stating that “there is no requirement to involve the public”, it was good to see GRCA Vice-Chair Sue Foxton state that there will be public engagement in any land disposition process.
Numerous groups have registered to delegate at Friday morning’s GRCA Board meeting and hopefully people will continue to express concerns to the GRCA Board by writing the Clerk and Chair at:
Clerk - Eowyn Spencer - espencer at grandriver.ca
Vice-Chair - Mayor Sue Foxton - sfoxton at northdumfries.ca

Action Required - Please speak up and state that we should not be selling off precious conservation green lands for development.
3) Niska Lands Sell-Off - Continuing the theme of selling off Conservation Lands for housing development, the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has released its Management Report for the Niska Lands located in both Guelph and Puslinch. This report has several possible recommendations, one of which involves selling off Conservation Lands for housing development.
You can read the report in the GRCA Board Package starting on Page 127:

4) The Ontario Science Centre Closure - Concern and criticism of the provincial government continues following the sudden decision last Friday afternoon to close the Ontario Science Centre before it fell down. Social media states the current absurd situation extremely well:
Permits to complete work on Ontario Science Centre had been submitted in May:

In the meantime, the provincial government is scrambling to find temporary space for the Ontario Science Centre for the many years until their waterfront spa location at Ontario Place will be ready. In typical Ford fashion, this temporary space will cost more than doing the proper repairs to the current Ontario Science Centre location:

5) Liberals To Open Investigations Into Doug Ford Government - In a very interesting move, provincial Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie held a press conference today to announce that if elected within 30 days she would appoint a special investigator to conduct a comprehensive investigations in to controversial dealings under Premier Doug Ford’s government. Investigations would include the sudden closure of the Ontario Science Centre, the relocation of ServiceOntario outlets, the 95 year lease of Ontario Place for a spa, taxpayer money going to the Beer Store, the Greenbelt land swap, and patronage appointments to public institutions such as the LCBO, Ontario Power Generation, and the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee:

8) Guelph Lobbyist Registry By-Law - Confoundingly the City of Guelph is introducing a Lobbyist Registry By-Law that is confusing and may significant curtail public input into community issues. It is unclear what problem Guelph is trying to solve and their poorly written and confusing proposal raises many issues and concerns. Learn more in the Staff Report attached below or online:

It should be noted that it is good to see the City of Guelph introducing a light pollution by-law, trying to reduce the impacts of night-time illumination and advocate for dark-skies in a Staff Report also being presented on July 3rd.
9) If I Had A Billion Dollars... - Kudos to Liberal MPP Mary Margaret McMahon for some humour in the provincial legislature just before it was adjourned by the Premier last week. Enjoy a smile at:

12) Climate ActionWR Presentations - ClimateActionWR has been attending local Councils to present the latest 2022 Greenhouse Gas Report (we are indeed half way through 2024 already but apparently these numbers take time to compile and report - only adding to our climate woes). Unfortunately, instead of decreasing, our emissions are actually increasing and we are far off target to meet the 50% required emissions reduction target by 2030. You can download the report at the following link:

We would love to see more delegations and also expressions of support for bold climate action at the upcoming council meetings, as above. Please reach out to mats.vankleff at gmail.com <mailto:mats.vankleff at gmail.com> if you have any questions or are interested to support.
