Good Day,

It’s been an unprecedented week of rallies and protests as our communities demand better from our governments. Here’s the latest:

1) Huge Fight For Farmland Rally At Waterloo Regional Council - The Wilmot farmers came to Regional Headquarters on Wednesday night with their tractors to send a strong message firsthand to Regional Council that our communities are unwilling! It was a sight to behold as a procession of tractors over a kilometre long travelled from the proposed mega-industrial site near New Hamburg right down the Conestoga Expressway into Kitchener, then along Ottawa Street and Weber Street into the downtown core.

Media coverage was considerable before the convoy had even started as all day long it was the lead item on newscasts and talk radio. So many tractors in the city in rush hour traffic drew a lot of attention with live traffic reports and people gathering to watch along the route. The tractors arrived to the loud cheers of hundreds of supporters assembled at Regional Headquarters. There was live music from PunkeyDoodles Steve, speeches from Mike Schreiner leader of the Green Party, NDP MPP Catherine Fife, Liberal MPP Ted Hsu, Jenn Pfenning of the NFU, Mark Reusser of the WFA, some of the affected farmers, and others.

Then a record crowd of attendees packed the Regional Council Chambers to hear five Fight For Farmland delegations finally get an opportunity to address Council through a motion introduced to demand a Staff Report about the shredding of all the corn. There was a very strong message that we are unwilling sent to the Regional Councillors and Mayors. Then in the increasing darkness of the night, the tractors and their police motorcade escort rumbled back through the city and down the expressway home.

It was unprecedented convoy, protest, and Council Meeting. Photographs are attached below and media coverage has been extensive:

Here’s also a Youtube video of some of the tractors coming out of the break/staging area at the Kitchener Aud. Kudo’s for The Aud team for having signage up and an entire area reserved for the tractors!

Action Required: Keep calling, writing, and speaking up to Regional Council to see this industrial mega-site moved to a less absurd location.

2) Monday's Wilmot Fight For Farmland Rally - On Monday night a strong message was also sent to Wilmot Township Council that we are UNWILLING as a record crowd of hundreds of people protested with signs, banners, and boxes of Corn Flakes in Wilmot Township at Castle Kilbride. There were great speeches, live music from PunkeyDoodles Steve, and lots of noisy horn honking.

It was fantastic to see the motion finally approved to allow up to three delegates to speak to issues at future Council meetings, however it was very disappointing to not see a motion stating Wilmot is Unwilling being brought forward by Mayor Natasha Salonen and Wilmot Councillors.

We will continue to demand that Wilmot declare it is unwilling and show that we are not a willing host with the support of thousands of people and excellent media coverage:

Action Required: Keep calling, writing, and speaking up to Wilmot Township Council to get them to declare that Wilmot is an Unwilling Host.

3) Additional Fight For Farmland Freedom Of Information Requests Denied - There were several media articles about the most recent denial of Freedom Of Information requests as the secrecy and lack of transparency about this mega-industrial site continues and citizens remain in the dark about any studies or research done (if any) for this massive development.

This latest request was simply seeking “responsive records” or a simple listing of the names and titles of any studies we have been denied access to in early FIR requests. Quite simply we are trying to see if there have even been any studies done and the refusal to provide us with even just the names of such studies may be indicative that there are no studies to reference and proper planning studies have not even been undertaken or completed.

CityNews - Farmland Advocates Denied Freedom Of Information Requests For Wilmot Land Details:
	https://kitchener.citynews.ca/2024/08/23/weve-sold-out-to-the-province-fight-for-farmland-rebuffed-by-region-of-waterloo-for-information-on-wilmot-land-assembly/

	https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/wilmot-farmers-say-freedom-of-information-requests-denied-again-new-rallies-planned-1.7012881

4) Ford Government Demands Secrecy - Provincial media journal Queen’s Park Today that does daily reporting on activities at our provincial capital had their quote of the day for today from provincial Agricultural Minister Rob Flack stating “[Region of Waterloo Chair Karen Redman] signed a non-disclosure agreement, so that’s their legal commitment.” Stating that Minister Flack wouldn’t commit to releasing the Region of Waterloo from the non-disclosure agreement it signed with the province regarding plans to expropriate farmland in Wilmot Township for industrial use. They went on to say that “Earlier this month, Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli blamed the controversy on a “lack of transparency” from the Region.

It is staggering to see the length that Doug Ford and his provincial government is going to keep things secret and not let the Region out of the NDA on this Wilmot Land Assembly.

We need to know why the province continues to insist on such secrecy and why Doug Ford and Mike Harris Jr. are so afraid of transparency and a better process!

Here’s a video posted on social media of Minister Rob Flack stumbling through being called out by reporters as he tells journalists to ask Chair Redman who they then point out is gagged by a provincial NDA and can’t answer questions. It has received over 40,000 views so far, hundreds of likes, and has over 50 comments calling out the Ford government:

	https://x.com/bowker_john/status/1829169475951968454

Action Required - Keep writing and calling out Mike Harris Jr. for misleading our communities for months, and Minister’s Mike Harris Jr., Vic Fedili, Rob Flack, and Premier Doug Ford for throwing the Region of Waterloo under the bus while keeping citizens in the dark.

5) Additional Fight For Farmland Media Coverage - The considerable media coverage of the Wilmot land grab continues in agricultural publications across Ontario and across Canada including a fantastic National Observer article about the impact of this “mysterious industrial project" on Adam Van Bergijk and his family:

Kudos also to Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife who has created an excellent 10 minute video on some of the people most impacted by this massive Wilmot development:

Action Required - Please take the time to watch and share this great video.

6) GRCA Strategy Public Meetings - The Grand River Conservation Authority is undertaking consultation on its Draft Conservation Strategy. Two virtual Public Information Centres will be held with pre-registration required:

Action Required - Attend, learn and speak up for the future of our watershed

7) Death Of The Provincial Growth Plan - We reported last week about the release of the new Provincial Planning Statement. Now as more people and groups get a chance to review what has been released we are getting a better idea of the implications and consequences. As expected it is not good as the province is further weakening farmland and natural protection that will make the housing crisis worse.

The Provincial Growth Plan directed new growth to existing towns and cities to protect farmland and limit unaffordable urban sprawl. This plan has now been replaced by the Provincial Planning Statement. Here’s some initial analysis by the law firms most excited to see if it:

8) New Energy Minister Stephen Lecce Reverses Course On Clean Energy - After wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars foolishly cancelling clean energy contracts on his first days in office, Premier Doug Ford and former Minister Todd Smith announced a number of months ago a new call for renewable energy projects. The original plan was expected to procure up to 2,000 MW in new renewable power (solar, wind, and biomass). However, that was under Minister Todd Smith who abruptly left government last month. Now new Energy Minister Stephen Lecce has backtracked and announced yesterday that this new call for energy projects won’t be solely focussed on renewables as originally announced but will now consider any sources of energy including fossil gas projects and other worrisome power generation sources.

Unfortunately, Ontario’s energy grid is getting increasingly dirtier as in 94% of Ontario’s energy was considered clean - that figure has now dropped to 87%.

9) The Greenbelt Scandal That Keeps Giving - Greenbelt scandal developer Bob Schickendanz, formerly also with the Ontario Home Builder Association, who sold that infamous parcel to developer Michael Rice in King Township got caught holding a fundraiser for Stephen Lecce ahead of a decision for a new high school in Wasaga Beach:

The Trillium - Integrity Commissioner Report - Developer Got Town Officials To Lobby Minister For New School At $1,000-A-Plate Fundraiser:

Also, a lawyer implicated in the Greenbelt Scandal was not registered to be a lobbyist. Ontario’s integrity commissioner found a lawyer working for two developers who owned land the Ford government, including Flato Developments’ Shakir Rehmatullah, removed from the Greenbelt in 2022 “failed to comply” with the province’s lobbying law by not registering with its office. It has been noted the PCs still have not completed the mandatory 2021 review of the Lobbyist Registration Act. In 2023 they said they would start the review in the coming weeks, then in March 2024 they said they would not longer commit to a date.

10) Conestoga Meats Seeks To Clearcut Significant Forest - A decision on the expansion by Conestoga Meats near Breslau has been deferred until the end of September so that the Region of Waterloo Council can decide whether to permit the destruction of a significant 36 acres of forest on the property. There have been proposals to try to reforest other parcels and offset damages, however considerable issues remain with each alternative.

Kudo’s to Inga Rinne, Dr. Greg Michalenko, Susan Bryant and others who delegated yesterday at the Region of Waterloo to demand better solutions.

As we know, Ontario is facing emergency room closures and shortages of nurses, family doctors and other health professionals. At the same time, our provincial government plans to spend tens of billions of dollars on two unnecessary highways through the Greenbelt.
