Good Day,

The furor has reached unprecedented levels in Waterloo Region, an excellent Cooperate Ontario campaign launches, and more. Here’s the latest:

1) Region Of Waterloo Faces Major Public Backlash For Uncomprehendable Destruction of Food Crop - The Region of Waterloo is facing a major public backlash with front-page headline news and callers swamping local talk radio shows expressing outrage over the needless destruction of 160 acres of corn in Wilmot Township that was nearly ready for harvest.

It is a reckless waste of taxpayer dollars to see over 160 acres of food being destroyed by equipment brought in from St. Thomas after all local farmers refused to destroy the crop. It’s estimated that the Region squandered a minimum of $160,000 by destroying this crop as corn is currently valued at about $5 per bushel, with an average yield of 200 bushels per acre on this prime farmland, representing revenues of about $1,000 per acre. With this single farm parcel totalling 160 acres, this is at least $160,000 in lost revenue, which still needs to be compensated to the landowner by the Region, not to mention the additional cost incurred for crop destruction services. To put this into perspective, this yield could have produced 2.5 million boxes of 400g Corn Flakes cereal, or as one newspaper stated enough for more than 4 boxes of cereal for every resident of the region.

Here’s some of the recent media coverage about the needless crop destruction:

Mike Farwell Radio Show - Both Fight For Farmland Spokesperson Alfred Lowrick and GREN Vice-Chair Kevin Thomason were on the Mike Farwell Radio Show on Thursday where this crop destruction was the lead item on for every newscast all day long. Check out the July 24th recording at:

CityNews - Mike Farwell Show - Fight For Farmland Interview (starting at 0:17:05)
	https://kitchener.citynews.ca/2024/07/24/wednesday-july-24th-2024/

Callers Outraged - And the Fight For Farmland was also the subject of Wednesday's Mike Farwell’s “12 O’Clock Talk Back Hour” on 570 News where it was great to see the switchboard swamped with callers all expressing disappointment, outrage, and disbelief over this attempted land assembly. Many callers even demanded Regional Chair Karen Redman’s resignation. You can listen to the show at:

Action Required - Please continue to write, call, e-mail, and speak up about the needless shredding of food and hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.

2) Our Fundamental Values And Democracy Are Being Destroyed Along With Farmland - Waterloo Record Newspaper Columnist Luisa D’Amato wrote an extremely insightful article on Wednesday in which she not only calls the destruction of so much high-quality corn “a deeply offensive act”, but also questions the entire approach by the Region of Waterloo stating “The Region of Waterloo that I know doesn’t behave like this.” Raising concerns about the values, ethics, and principles being so readily compromised and overridden by the Region.
Be it the complete lack of even a single public meeting, the complete absence of any studies and information, the secrecy, the threats of expropriation, and not only this mega-industrial site land assembly but also the massive unplanned development of New Hamburg/Baden, and even the concept of huge pipelines to carry millions of litres of sewage and industrial waste daily to the City of Kitchener for disposal in the Grand River, it is all so contrary to all previous planning and the complete opposite of our longstanding values of sustainability, farmland protection, environmental and water protection, as well as public engagement.

Luisa states the Regional Official Plan “supported Waterloo Region’s longstanding values to keep urban sprawl to a minimum, thus preserving the countryside. Development in rural areas was carefully restricted. Today, this sudden, secretive and arbitrary decision to put a huge industrial site on prime farmland, with massive changes for the rural area around it, could not be less aligned with the Waterloo Region principle. Our value of deep connection to the countryside has been buried it seems, along with all that corn.”

Local business leader Paul Kalbfleisch went even further to suggest that what is at stake here isn’t just our values, but democracy itself as the recent actions of the Region of Waterloo suggest that when there is an opportunity for economic development, the fundamentals of democracy can be overridden. If Waterloo Region is willing to push aside longstanding values and democratic openness for some parcels of land, what can we expect in the future when the choices are even bigger and harder? How devoted are we to democracy?

Action Required - Please continue to write, call, e-mail and speak up about the values, principles, and democracy that you expect from our governments.

3) Wilmot Township Meeting Rally and Protest - A huge thank you to everyone who came out to protest and rally outside the Township of Wilmot Council Meeting this past Monday. It was incredible to see the growing numbers with over 150 people showing firsthand they are unwilling and so many Fight for Farmland supporters with homemade signs and bright t-shirts. The sound of honking cars could be heard throughout the Council meeting and even in the online livestream until the end of the meeting. Some photos are attached below.
Thanks to those who delegated at the meeting to address Wilmot Councillors Sidhu and Wilkinson's motion for up to three delegations at future Council Meetings on any general interest topic relevant to the Township. The Staff Report and motion passed unanimously with several amendments helping to make future Council meetings even more welcoming to the public. The new procedural bylaws should be in place by the September 9th Wilmot Council meeting and we hope to soon have speakers finally be able to discuss this land assembly with our council. Let's continue to show them that we are UNWILLING HOSTS!

Here is a list of the upcoming Wilmot and Regional meetings. We are hoping to continue Monday’s impressive show of force and firsthand demonstration of an unwilling community with protest rally’s in advance of each of these upcoming meetings:

Wilmot Township Council: 60 Snyder’s Road West, Baden - Monday, August 26, 2024 - 5:30 pm (council meets at 7:00 pm)

Region of Waterloo Council: 150 Frederick Street, Kitchener - Wednesday, August 28, 2024 - 6:30 pm

Here’s some media coverage of Monday's Wilmot Council meeting:

Action Required - Get ready to join the protest rallies on August 26th and August 28th and sign up to be one of the 3 delegations to speak on any topic at Wilmot Council meetings this autumn once the Delegation Request form is available on the Wilmot Township website in the next week or two.

4) Other Fight For Farmland Media Coverage - It’s been fantastic to see more great newspaper articles asking such important questions about this absurd proposed Wilmot mega-industrial land assembly in the heart of prime farmland. And kudos to everyone writing Letters To The Editor in area newspapers. Please keep speaking up! Here’s some of the recent articles:

9) Public Healthcare - Not Greenbelt Highways - Health groups and environmental groups are teaming up for a weekend of action called "Public Healthcare not Greenbelt Highways" for the weekend of September 14th-15th. The key message will be that we are tired of being told there's 'no money for healthcare' when the province is planning to spend tens of billions on Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass which will both destroy vital farmland and spread the type of concentrated air pollution we see around the 401 to new areas of the province.

This is a exciting opportunity to build solidarity between health and environmental activists and it's an important message to bring to the public with a potential early election on the horizon in Ontario:

July 25: Ford gets better treatment than Wynne, we don’t know how many jobs would actually be created on an industrial mega-site, and other letters to the editor
Letters to the editor question how many jobs would be created if an industrial mega-site does come to Wilmot, and suggest that Ontario Premier Doug Ford gets an easier ride than his predecessor, Kathleen Wynne.

Wilmot land grab reminds me of Elmira gambling issue
The Region of Waterloo’s attempt to assemble 770 acres in Wilmot Township for shovel-ready industrial use brings to mind the various go-rounds our community had with whether or not to allow slot machines in Elmira many years ago, and subsequent explorations of what bringing a casino into the Region of Waterloo would do.

I remember being present at various Woolwich Township public meetings, including the one where all but one elected official voted no to the idea of putting in 200 slots at the horse-race track in Elmira.

In addition to adding to the struggles of those prone to addictive gambling, the fit was wrong for the town in terms of location.

These were difficult but valuable conversations. There were predictions that Elmira would dry up on the vine if we didn’t accept this deal, which offered the township five per cent of the gross income those slots would generate.

That was then. Have you been to Elmira lately? No sign of a ghost town here — in fact, the opposite. The community made a choice that honoured public input, one that welcomed all sides to dig deep, getting to the bedrock folks wanted to build their lives on.

In the end, elected officials listened. They chose values and wisdom that saw their community not only survive but thrive these past 25 years, rendering the fears of losing out on “free” money to be a false narrative.

Today, the question for Wilmot and the Region of Waterloo comes down to what we hold dearest. For many, things such as protecting farmland, drinking water, and quality of life are worth more than the billions promised.

Don Penner, Waterloo

Ford is treated more generously than Wynne was
I find it very interesting that Doug Ford promised to get rid of the bloated government when he was campaigning to be premier. Now that he has had the job for a while, he has increased the size of cabinet and staff, as well as the spending on them, by more than 70 per cent.

His spending is far higher than that of the previous government. Yet, before Ford was elected, this newspaper regularly printed nasty, inflammatory letters from people about former Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne and her misspending of tax dollars.

Where are all those angry taxpayers now? Did they save all their hateful comments for a premier who was a liberal, gay woman? Is it OK to waste money now that the premier is a conservative, white male?

Oh, the hypocrisy of people never ceases to amaze. I guess it was never actually about the overspending — it was only about who was doing the spending.

Louise McLaren, Waterloo

What if they built a factory, but didn’t hire people?
Regarding the Wilmot land assembly, it presents a question that is faced by every primary economics class: How do you make such a choice? The things that must be considered are immense, but vitally important.

We are promised huge factories with thousands of employees. Recently we have seen some monstrously huge buildings, as promised, but most of the work is done by robots. And the future looks like even more robots.

We know what a farm is, and we know where food comes from, but do we know how many people will be employed in those factories, and whether anything edible will result? A choice must be made.

Donald L. Roberts, Kitchener

Mega-industries should not be built on rich farmland
The harassment of the Wilmot farmers must stop. They have made it abundantly clear that they are not willing hosts for an industrial mega-site.

They want to farm their land. You cannot find better land than these 770 acres, anywhere in Ontario. Why should the farmers have to witness the destruction of not only their land but also their homes?

How would you feel if someone came and took over your property and home, wouldn’t tell you what they would do with it, but just wanted it to be “shovel ready” for who knows what?

Why should these farmers have to spend hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to defend their rights to own their land?

This smells more and more of developers’ greed.

Just remember, when you pave over paradise, it is gone forever.

The flagrant hostility and contempt toward the people and the habitat in Wilmot must stop.

There are ugly gravel pits that need to be rehabilitated. There is land closer to the 401. Mega-industries should be built on nonarable land. Let’s continue to fight for farmland.
