We need a new word for water warriors like Susan who toil so effectively over the long haul. I propose "wetteran".

Kevin --

On this World Water Day, we are excited to announce the recipient of the 2022 Hugh Whiteley Lifetime Achievement Award is Helen Mills! The annual award celebrates the activism, advocacy, and dedication of remarkable individuals to protecting water in their locale within the Canadian Great Lakes Basin, and this year, we celebrate Helen for her extraordinary work.

Helen Mills is Founder and Co-Director of Lost Rivers (Toronto Green Community) and Founder of RAINscapeTO and Rivers Rising, as well as numerous other water and watershed-related initiatives. Helen has been a tireless champion of the environment, native plants and habitats, ecological education and, in particular, watersheds in Ontario, particularly in the GTA.Helen’s quiet leadership, foresight and dedication to our Lost River Watersheds, as well as her dream of Blue Green cities in which water, landscape and all peoples live in healthy cohesion, have inspired thousands and been utterly profound in helping people appreciate their intimate connections to the water systems that form an essential part of their lives.

Susan Bryant and Deborah Gordon were also finalists for the award. Susan Bryant is a remarkable community leader who has worked diligently to protect water in Elmira since 1989, including as a key member of the leadership team that successfully campaigned against the Uniroyal corporation for allowing toxic chemicals to contaminate Elmira's drinking water. Deborah Gordon has worked for decades to protect Lake Simcoe and the Maskinonge River from pollution, sprawl and degradation, including with Save the Oak Ridges Moraine (STORM) as well as countless hours as a volunteer with Save the Maskinonge.

We believe recognizing the amazing work happening across the Canadian Great Lakes to protect water is an important step to inspire the next generation of water protectors who build on the foundations laid by today’s fierce water advocates. Please consider donating to expand this important heritage for the present and the future.
