Hello everyone
There has been significant removal of new growth trees in ESPA 19 between Vernal Pond 12 to the cement path that goes from Columbia Forest to Vista Hills. This forest will not regenerate with damage like this unless young trees are allowed to establish themselves.
Throughout the area, especially around the bridge heading towards Clair Hills behind the Columbia Forest BLVD loop, someone has made make many make shift teepee like structures of the saplings that they destroyed. I saw six structures near the bridge area, most on the south side of the bridge with more on the path near the bridge heading West towards Vista Hills. With Howald’s recent destruction of property I am wondering if the removal of the saplings is linked to that. This will impair the hydrology of the area.
All the ponds and Clair Creen are very low this year including the wetland feature located across the street from Howald’s property. This is all in the well field for the Greenbrook wells. Water losses at this point may result in increased contamination risks for the Greebrook wells who have less water to dilute contaminates with. It is extremely important to maintain the forest canopy and not pave these areas or mitigate water away via storm drains to protect the recharge capacity of the lands.
It is the plants and trees that create the microclimate needed to hold the water and allow the slow infiltration into the aquifer and vernal ponds. Many of the trees are not looking healthy right now. We need to assure succession of the proper native species of trees to maintain the PH to keep this first system, soil health and biodiversity protected.
