[All] Waterloo Region Shoe Strike for Climate Justice, September 25th 2020, 9-10am

Hi GREN friends, hope this finds you all well :)   

Our timelines are admittedly ridiculously short for this action, and so
we really need any help you can offer to donate some gently used winter
footwear and to get word out via email, social media, phone calls,
whatever  - as we to try to reach the thousands of people who joined us
last September for our last big climate strike and as we connect climate
justice to housing injustice in Waterloo Region.

Dear Friends,

This time last year we were just one week away from the largest climate
demonstration in our region's history [2]. Much has changed since then,
but our commitment remains resolute.
September 25th 2020 will be the next global day of climate action, and
local organizers are planning a symbolic demonstration connecting
climate justice and community wellbeing. Due to COVID-19, we will not be
gathering in person this time around, but will instead be joining a
global call for climate action with a shoe strike [3]. This will allow
you to: 

 	* Stand for climate action while maintaining physical distance
 	* Provide tangible support for those who will be living unsheltered
this winter

The action will be from 9-10 am Sept 25th at Waterloo Public Square
(set-up at 8am)

To make this demonstration as powerful as possible, we need: 

 	* Hundreds of pairs of warm winter boots and shoes for donation
 	* Some small climate justice signs to display with the footwear (see
video [3])
 	* 20 volunteers to help with staging and set up on the 25th (between
8-10am as able - media will be present)

You can make a difference by: 

 	* Bringing footwear and/or signs to Waterloo Public Square [4] between
8 and 8:45 am on Friday, or dropping them off at the Duke Street doors
of St. John the Evangelist Church [5] any afternoon this week (between
noon and 3pm - please ring the Social Development Centre doorbell for
assistance)
 	* Sending a note to laura at divestwaterloo.ca if you are able to
volunteer on the 25th (for instance by setting up at 8am and/or holding
a sign between 9-10am)
 	* Liking and sharing this event via email and social media (Facebook
[6], Instagram [7], Twitter [8] #shoestrike).

All donations of warm winter shoes and boots in support of this action
will go to those in need in our Region. There are over 250 people in our
region who will remain unsheltered this winter. 

This action is being organized by Fridays for Future KW [9], Unsheltered
Campaign [10], 50 by 30 WR [11] and Divest Waterloo. [12] It is also in
solidarity with the hundreds of climate actions that will be happening
on the 25th around the world, including the youth-led We Are Not Going
Back campaign hosted by Climate Strike Canada (see here [13]).

In keeping with updated COVID regulations there will be a maximum of 25
people able to volunteer in the square at one time.... but we have room
for hundreds of pairs of boots!

Thank you for your ongoing support for Divest Waterloo [14] and for your
part in our collective action to raise awareness and engage our
community on issues related to climate change, our pursuit of a low
carbon economy, and our movement towards a just and sustainable future.
We hope that you and your loved ones are well, and look forward to a
time when we can gather again.
