Dear Hon. Prime Minister and Ministers.

This climate change court hearing is @Ecojustice's biggest case.

Aamjiwnaang has long been one of the worst cases of Environmental Racism in Canada. It is where Tar Sands gets refined in Ontario. A peer-reviewed study has found “strikingly high” rates of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), endocrine issues, assorted cancers and respiratory illnesses as well as a significant decline in the number of boys born.
It has contributed to the illness costs of smog which increases the price for hospitals, business with lost productivity and sick leave, it contaminates the water water we drink and air we breath. We are paying in human lives today.

Covid 19 is hitting harder in smog areas which house a disproportional amount of black, Indigenous and low income under serviced communities who are feeling the impacts of this environmental racism. These are images of Toronto showing the smog and Covid 19 cases are in the attachments.

Ada Lockeridge. Ron Plain teamed up with Ecojustice years back, to fight the long standing Environmental pollution of their community with a Charter Challenge in the courts. In spite of their victory to secure testing to protect their community, the courts failed to follow through on a years-old promise to review the way the Province regulates industrial air pollution. Another lawsuit was launched.

Since then, 28 hectares transferred from Shell Canada to Aamjiwnaang First Nation in 2019 but data in 2019 still showed 'strikingly high' rates of cancer in some Ontario industrial cities and Aamjiwnaang.

Vanessa and Beze Gray have hosted the annual “Toxic Tour” by Aamjiwnaang First Nation to raise public awareness of the pollution issues their community faces. They have released a new app to help residents report pollution.

Beze Gray of Aamjiwnaang was 1 of 7 young people who launched this latest Ecojustice climate lawsuit stating softened emission targets contravene Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This lawsuit asking for "science-based" targets for CO2 reductions. Failing to do so, the lawsuit argues, "will lead to widespread illness and death" affecting young people and future generations.
The Ford government filed motion to strike down the climate hearing.

An appeal to fight the Ford Government's decision to stop the hearing was launched and a virtual court hearing about that took place in July 2020.

In my view Mr. Ford is using his political power to facilitate political obstruction and abuse of dominance in a clearly anti competitive manner, to enable polluting firms to continue to violate law while disenfranchising Indigenous and visible minorities from having healthy communities. The result of his quashing the children's rights to a hearing, is ignoring the fact that polluting companies are the causality of illnesses, health issues, physical and economic tort harm impacting the lives of these kids both in Ontario and in First Nation's communities. This is in my view, inexcusable and disgusting. They deserve their day in court. The amount of science to support their claims is staggering, cross jurisdictional and cross generational.

These kids and Ecojustice need our help and support to help stop these ongoing climate crimes. This Environmental Racism was systemic. The cross generational impacts of climate inaction are both physical and economic and it threatens their right to a healthy society and the money to support it.

I demand that these kids get their day in court and let's support their efforts to save their communities, our tax dollars and the planet. We all need to apply both fiscal and judicial prudence with how we manage this nation's environmental health and well being. We need to make it a priority now.
