*/Good Green Death Project Newsletter April 2020/*

*/_SPECIAL EDITION_/*

/The bad and sad news…/

There is really nothing I can add about our current situation with the
COVID-19 virus, except to say that I hope you are staying well, and have
enough food in your cupboards (and TP, I suppose…) How quickly our lives
have changed. How quickly we are learning what is really important and
essential. I am awed by how people are stepping up and supporting each
other.

/The good news…/

The work of the Good Green Death Project continues. Last month I
received an email from the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.
This is the provincial ministry responsible for funeral homes and
cemeteries.

The Ontario government is reaching out to us for input on potential
regulations for natural organic reduction (composting). This is the
opportunity we have been waiting for to ask everyone we know – and
everyone you know – to do one of two things. Well, three actually.

1)Answer the questions on the Consultation Paper
<https://www.ontariocanada.com/registry/view.do?postingId=31772&language=en>as
best you can. Scroll down on that page and click the link that says
Consultation Paper. Feel free to comment on alkaline hydrolysis (water
cremation) as well in the first section.

2)Write your MPP to say you’d like to see natural organic reduction
(composting) as a legal option in Ontario. Your MPP’s contact
information can be found here.
<https://www.ola.org/en/members/current/contact-information>

3)Ask any organization you belong to (religious, social, cultural, trade
etc) to do the same.

The deadline (haha) is *_April 17, 2020 at 11:59 pm._*

Since your personal comments are far more effective than a form letter
response or a petition, I would highly encourage you to write, email
and/or call.

You have your own reasons, but please also consider the following points
as to why you support this alternative:

·I want the final disposition of my remains to reflect my green values

·I want my composted remains to be used to plant a tree (such as in a
protected forest cemetery)

·I’m concerned that current options are harmful to our environment

·We need options that don’t use fossil fuels, and reduce greenhouse gas
emissions

Feel free to share your reasons for supporting this option on our
Facebook page or Twitter (links below). And please share this news widely.

Kelly’s email is below if you require more information. This was her
message to us:**

Good afternoon:

I am writing to advise you that the Ministry of Government and Consumer
Services has posted a consultation paper on Ontario’s regulatory
registry that may be of interest to you.

The consultation paper seeks feedback to inform potential proposals for
legislative and regulatory changes that would establish a regulatory
framework more tailored to licensing of providers of alkaline hydrolysis
and possibly of other alternative methods of disposing of human remains
under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002. The posting
is now available for review and public comment.

We value your input as we consider how best to move forward. If you or
your colleagues are interested in reviewing the consultation paper and
providing feedback, we encourage you to visit the posting available here
<https://www.ontariocanada.com/registry/view.do?postingId=31772&language=en>.

The deadline to submit feedback is *_April 17, 2020, by 11:59 p.m._*

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at

Thank you for your support for this important consumer protection
initiative.

Kind regards,

Kelly Houston-Routley
