Hi folks
The declaration of Climate Emergency passed in the City of Waterloo. The motion was unanimous. Council were very happy because our Region has been proactive with solutions and now we have proven public support, they can now advance with establishing Municipal carbon targets to work within.
The video of the meeting is here. The Climate issue is at 1:56 mark onward.

In addition I would like to relay that there are two things we can ask council members right now to take climate action on. The first would be to secure the end of the leaf collection system done with bulldozer and trucks that are used to pick up leaves raked on to a curb. The firm doing this simply gathers the leaves up and dumps the leaves in the landfill generating methane. It's a practice council members would like to see gone if we can raise up public support to do it. I'm all for that. A photo of how they work is in the attachments. It's a bit crazy really.
We have the power to ask for free transit for Waterloo to reduce smog and illness costs while also reducing risks of accidents, traffic jams etc. Why not create the best incentive ever to secure affordable green living in our Region? If you want it ASK FOR IT. It's as easy as that. Again, tell your council members.
All in all I am delighted, amazed and thankful at the incredible day we had in that council chamber. Lovely to see the outpouring of public support at all the rallies and the unified voice of support from council was an absolute blessing to see.
I created a video showing the last decade worth of climate rallies in our area. We were among the first to make the connection that Treaty Rights are Climate Rights too. It's on the City's website or you can view this as a stand alone video here: 10 years of Climate Marches in Waterloo Ontario
