| Good morning! Hope you're enjoying the long weekend. Here's your weekly roundup from National Observer. |

As Parliament debates competing motions to declare a climate emergency, Postmedia (publisher of the National Post and local outlets across the country) is lobbying to join Jason Kenney's "war room" against climate advocates.
Postmedia has hired Kenney's ex-campaign manager and former chief-of-staff to jockey for some of the $30 million dedicated to fighting environmentalists and the growing list of companies like HSBC that refuse to do business with coal or oilsands producers. (We can't help pointing out the deep irony that Postmedia itself is foreign-funded.)
Also this week, the Bank of Canada made an unprecedented move this week. It warned fossil fuel producers, as well as the banks that loan them money, that the transition to a low-carbon economy is already "underway." The central bank says that banks and oil and gas companies are exposed to risks from "fire sales" that could destablize the economy.
The Green Party stepped into the climate emergency debate by announcing a plan to double the speed of climate pollution cuts, stop foreign oil imports, create a non-partisan federal cabinet and turn Canada's economy carbon-free by the end of the 21st century.
Two Canadian youth weighed in as well: "Our names are Monica and Niklas. We’re two young people who have grown up with austerity our entire lives while inheriting a dying earth... do any of the party leaders have a climate plan that matches the scale and urgency youth demand?"

| Your support is already getting results. In one of the first articles from the Election Integrity Project, Caroline Orr reported on tactics that far-right extremists are using to evade Facebook's ban.
In response to the National Observer investigation, Facebook removed another Infowars-linked page.
And in a separate case this week, GoFundMe removed a Canadian far-right fundraising campaign after reporting by Fatima Syed.
We also used funding from this project to send Cecilia Keating to Paris to cover world leaders, including Prime Minister Trudeau as they signed the Christchurch pledge and called on other governments and tech companies to stamp out online sources of hatred and terrorism.
Also in Paris, Trudeau promised a new Charter to crackdown on tech companies that fail to address this growing problem, warning them that they may soon face fines.
Reporters on the trip also asked the prime minister about a new abortion law adopted this week in Alabama. |

Small towns in Alberta are owed at least $81 million in unpaid property taxes from oil and gas companies.
"... as they continue to operate they choose not to pay their taxes. They are making a deliberate decision not to pay those taxes, which then leaves the municipality with the challenge of collecting the dollars from other taxpayers or having to significantly modify their services.”
That's part of what Al Kemmere, president of Rural Municipalities of Alberta told Mike De Souza. And those unpaid taxes are just one of the costs.
"Most recently, a company that operated about 4,700 wells, Trident Exploration, shut down, leaving an estimated $329 million in cleanup liabilities at old sites as well as millions of dollars in unpaid taxes."
Here's the link to the whole article:
- Jason Kenney's government responds to 'urgency' over millions in unpaid oilpatch property taxes
And while we're on topics Albertan, Ross Belot punctured the myth of Liberals being anti-Alberta. |

Snuck in right before the long weekend

| Premier Doug Ford's Ontario government has cut 70 per cent of provincial funding to a non-profit organization that helps more than three dozen Indigenous communities protect endangered wildlife and natural resources. National Observer brings you the details.
And one of Canada's most intrepid Twitter warriors for a safe climate channels George Orwell as he dissects Doug Ford’s propaganda against a price on carbon. (He's also an author, entrepreneur and former professor with a Ph.D. in chemistry) |
