Jane's Walk: Reading a Neighbourhood
Saturday, May 4, 10-11:15 a.m.
Meet at Habitat for Humanity building (corner of Albert and Dorset Streets), Waterloo
Time: 10:00-11:15 a.m.
Cost: Free
We can learn a great deal about local cultural heritage and planning from the buildings and spaces in a few small blocks in Waterloo. The streets and open spaces immediately north of up-town Waterloo have been designated as a heritage conservation district for a very good reason. Albert, MacGregor, Fountain and few other short streets as well as Waterloo Park provide us with a wonderful assortment of architectural styles, reminders of the past and planning features that can be read like a book of community development. Walk Leader Robert Shipley is a retired urban planning professor and former head of the Heritage Resources Centre. He will share humorous stories and a unique perspective on the neighbourhood. Jane's Walk: 50 Years of History in Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery
May 4, 2019
Meet at the Zuber Angel across from 128 Moore Avenue, Kitchener
Time: 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Dating back to 1865, Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery is an inner-city oasis and a historical time machine. On this tour, we will visit memorials of some of the famous and not-so-famous men and women who made Berlin/Kitchener (and Canada) what it is today. We'll visit an uptown brewer, a forgotten soldier and an innovative builder. We'll visit a tire maker, an art collector and a senator that wooed Newfoundland into confederations by fighting for a banned substance to become legal (in 1948!). There's one man that keeps popping up in stories and on stones. And there's one woman that dug a foundation for an addition to the Barra Castle even though she had only one leg. This year's tour includes three new stops - and many favourites from other years. (We will be walking on ground that is sometimes uneven). Walk Leader: Wayne Miedema, for more information visit:

Renison University College presents: The Pre-history of the Girl Effect - Girlhood, Racial Hierarchies, and International Relations in the 1920s and 1930s
May 7, 2019
Hagey Hall (Room 117) University of Waterloo, 200 University Ave., Waterloo

Invest in a girl and she will doe the rest - This slogan is at the heart of the Nike Foundation's "Girl Effect" campaign. With this twenty-first-century context in mind, Speaker Kristine Alexander, Associate Professor, History, Canada Research Chair in Child and Youth Studies, University of Lethbridge, will use the global Girl Guide movement (which was established in Britain in 1909) and had attracted over a million members in 40 national and colonial contexts by the 1930s) to better understand the longer history of how class-specific and racialized ideas about girls and girlhood have been used to further particular visions of imperial-international relations and "development". Laurier Military History Speaker Series: Preparing for D-Day
May 15, 2019
Kitchener Public Library, Central Library, 85 Queen St. North, Kitchener
Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Planning the Normandy Invasion--Operation Overlord--began in 1943 but the elements of the plan greatly changed and evolved over time. As late as May 1944, important details remained in play as intelligence from Britain's cryptanalysis program, code named "Ultra", revealed that the German Army was actively making changes in Normandy. In this talk, Terry Copp, Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at Wilfrid Laurier University, and the founder and Director Emeritus of the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies, will scrutinize the many elements influencing the planning of Overlord and its predecessors, including strategic feasibility and inter-Allied relations, and demonstrate how these high command decisions affected the men that stormed the beaches of Normandy on that fateful day - June 6th 1944. Registration is required, please visit:

Mennonite Archives of Ontario Presents - Growing Family: Design and Desire in Mennonite Genealogy
Opening May 1, 2019 to May 2021
Conrad Grebel University College Milton Good Library (3rd Floor), 140 Westmount Road N, Waterloo
Monday - Friday 8:30-4:30
Genealogists do not just uncover the past, they take active roles in shaping it. Designing a family tree may seem like a simple act, but this act requires choices and reflects deep desires for connection, identity and legitimacy.
Through paintings, photographs and original documents from the Mennonite Archives of Ontario, Growing Family takes the viewer through the ways in which Ontario Mennonites have used genealogy to remember the past, reconnect with the present, and hope for the future. These designs are at once uniquely personal and reflective of the universal longing for family. Please see the exhibit website: Growing Family <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001dxvYWRld133US3bHxoIcr4woIB8HU_xhNnvpUt4DBvqlYbn78xbMc4E_BOx_GJRLlXIBIKXTpr6ztRm_HaEEikCr-9bPPb2jeNCeCQMQVn0sG8dqiEZ00B-SRBdV98kROaJD8-Oo7EQA-GVNXRy3mged9Mt_KG0kql6niHy3VTVIrhwVBHO-irsq_okUA-d746eRDRLpivPu0D6HGF6q7bTeZlgtYzG6&c=ilxJqswUtYc_hcuFy2ZKF0ebspGaKpDM8Blg-KVDJmAgunMHgGhyHw==&ch=GNhWs5cY2gtLw_J8jen3TWIjorHtdWD1O5GNMaR9b8X8PsPi1IFYFw==> for more information or call 519-885-0220 x24238
Made in France: Haute Couture and the French Fashion Industry 1870-1970

Fashion History Museum, 74 Queen Street. East Cambridge
Wed-Sunday 12:00PM-5:00PM

Centuries of aristocratic patronage established Paris as a city known for its fine dressmakers, milliners, tailors and shoemakers. By the 19th century, the entire French industry had a reputation for quality desing - something was chic by the mere virtue of being French! Copied or pirated around the world, the Haute Couture industry was at the centre of international style deliniation until the rise of ready-to-wear in the 1960s. The Made in France exhibit features more than 65 garments and accessories of French fashions, highlights include examples of couture from Worth, Poiret, Lanvin, Patou, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, Balmain, Dior, Yves St. Laurent, Courreges, Cardin and more.
