[All] Bill 66, Schedule 5, Repeal of Toxics Reduction Act

We have made important progress on Bill 66, but major problems are still in the Ford government's proposed bill. Schedule 5 of Bill 66 repeals the existing Toxics Reduction Act. Reduction in the use of toxic substances is essential to avoid tragedies such as those that occurred in Walkerton and Elmira. The Canadian Environmental Law Association has put together a detailed description of the major loss that the repeal of this bill brings. Indeed, what was needed was to strengthen, and more fully implement and enforce the existing legislation. GREN is a signatory to the submissions CELA made on this part of Bill 66. The submission is attached.

To learn more about this issue and other threats to our environment from proposals from the Ford government, come out to the February 7 meeting that we and other groups in this community are organizing at the First United Church in Waterloo. Here you will hear from Theresa McClenaghan from CELA about the TRA and other issues, Bruce Davidson and Susan Bryant about the lessons from the Walkerton and Elmira tragedies, and Arlene Slocombe of the Wellington Waterwatchers about impacts of bottled water companies on groundwater. Kevin Thomason from GREN will also speak of our successes and of actions still needed.

This meeting will also be a celebration of our success in forcing the Ford government to state that it will remove Schedule 10 from Bill 66.
