Hi GREN folks,
The provincial election has not even started yet and it has already been a crazy week with the release of a video of Provincial Conservative Leader Doug Ford telling a group of developers back in February that he would “open up the Greenbelt” to allow development and urban sprawl on currently protected lands.
After a tremendous outpouring of support for the Greenbelt and a clear message being sent by the public to Doug Ford that destroying the Greenbelt would cost him the election, late this afternoon he backtracked and announced “The people have spoken - we won’t touch the Greenbelt That’s it, the people have spoken. I’m going to listen to them, they don’t want me to touch the Greenbetl. Simple as that.”
So that it appears the Greenbelt might be safe until there is another flip-flop or threat arise as it currently appears that there is all-party support for the existing Greenbelt. However, there are still many other important issues for the pending election. It is so important that we all are informed and engaged. There are several events coming up in Waterloo Region that you may be interested in:
1) Where Do Ontario Parties Stand on the Environment - Thursday May 3rd from 6pm to 8pm.
Alternatives Journal, GreenPAC, WREN and others are hosting an interesting panel event in downtown Kitchener to delve into environmental issues and where each party stands.
Kitchener - May 3rd, 6pm to 8pm - The Co-Working Space, Kitchener
Details are available at their website - https://www.greenpac.ca/wheredopartiesstand - and more information is below.
2) Meet the Candidates - Dates and Times depending on Riding
The Social Development Centre, Divest Waterloo and many other community groups are organizing informal roundtable discussions with candidates in each riding around Waterloo.
Kitchener-Centre - May 23rd, 6 to 8pm - St. John’s Church, Kitchener
Kitchener-Conestoga - May 28th, 6pm to 8pm - Location to be announced
Waterloo - May 29th, 6pm to 8pm - First United Church, Waterloo
Details are available at their website - http://www.waterlooregion.org/sites/default/files/Meet-the-candidates%20(2).pdf and below.
Lets make sure that we aren’t complacent and have regrets after the election. This election is not a foregone conclusion as a recent poll showed that 48% of voters are undecided or could be persuaded to change. Get informed, get out and support the best candidates, engage your neighbours and community, and lets work toward the best possible future.
Cheers,
Kevin.
