Dear Greg,
We're thrilled to share great news from Peru for water and land defender Máxima Acuña in her battle with mining giant, Yanacocha, as well as thank you messages from Máxima and other Write for Rights 2016 cases!
We'll also highlight May as our Month of Action for Mining Justice. We're just getting warmed up – it's not too late to take part! Details below.

Environmental defender Maxima has prevailed!

Finally a victory for Máxima Acuña, a farmer and environmental defender in Peru who has taken on one of the world's biggest gold and copper mines over the ownership of the land where she lives with her family, and braved violent attacks from local police for refusing to leave.
After almost five years of proceedings, Peru's Supreme Court has made a landmark decision to clear Máxima of all criminal charges.
Thanks to you and Amnesty activists from around the world, we sent more than 300,000 letters, emails and tweets calling for her protection, for which she's expressed her deepest thanks: "I want to thank with all my heart for the number of letters that have been sent to me. They give me courage and encouragement, to continue fighting."

Last week 82 of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by the armed group Boko Haram were released. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls, sparking a global outcry and millions calling for their freedom of safety, including hundreds of thousands of Amnesty supporters.
Amnesty International is calling on the Nigerian government to ensure the girls receive adequate support so that they can fully reintegrate in their communities, to respect their privacy, and to make sure the girls are reunited with their families as quickly as possible.

Human rights abuses at Canadian-owned mining and oil and gas sites around the world are widespread and well documented. Victims of such abuse have nowhere to turn to seek justice.
Government officials have told us that they plan to create an ombudsperson for the extractive sector, yet they have not announced it officially and it was not in the federal budget. We need to hold them to their word!

Across Canada, Amnesty and a wide range of partners have so far collected more than 120,000 signatures on petitions and postcards calling for a halt to the Site C dam.
In April, we presented petitions to British Columbia MPs so they could help bring these concerns back to Ottawa. NDP MPs and Green Party leader Elizabeth May have spoken forcefully on the need to uphold the Treaty rights of First Nations in the Peace Valley.

On Thursday five LGBTI activists were detained in Moscow while trying to deliver a petition<http://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=927355&ea.campaigner.email=ztYy7iXJ%2FcCd9wAzowdKwfdqbGUukCQJ&ea.campaigner.id=PEa4ArEBsfWZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> calling for an investigation into allegations of horrific human rights violations against gay men in Chechnya.
Though the activists were released that day, their detention follows a familiar pattern of the Russian authorities crushing activism.
Hundreds of thousands of Amnesty supporters around the world have called on authorities to investigate reports of mass abductions and torture of gay men in Chechnya, as well as the threats faced by the journalists in Russia who broke the story.

USA: Return to travel ban would harm some of the world's most vulnerable people

The Trump administration’s executive order on travel, scheduled for federal appeals court review this Monday, would harm both immigrants and US citizens if allowed to enter into effect.
Yesterday Amnesty International released findings that show the ban separated families and sent a message of bigotry and intolerance. The ban is contrary to international human rights law, violating treaties the US has committed to uphold.
