The rains we had this summer show how vulnerable Pickering and Darlington are to rising water levels and with urban sprawl, impervious surfaces from urban development, roads and the depletion of aquifers by quarry pits, the trend is that it will only add more flow to the Great Lakes resulting in more drought/flood situations increasing risk to those nuclear plants. The design constraints will likely be surpassed.
The algae issues of Erie are moving into Lake Ontario too so intakes are of concern. Both Darlington and Pickering have spent millions installing chlorinated systems to fight zebra mussels but the end result is chlorinated discharge that stimulated algae. It is gumming up the infrastructure requiring shut downs for clean up. Add blue green algae to mix it could mean the loss of Toronto's water supply in the future.
A study done for Hamilton's Source Water Protection Act shows how Lake Ontario's flow goes from Pickering to Toronto due to currents pushing the North Bound waves from US jetstreams into the curve like Presqu'ile. This sends flows counter clockwise in the Great Lakes. We must have regard for designs with that flow and timeline in mind. The intakes are at risk.
The sooner we can phase out nuclear power the better for Lake Ontario.
Thank you.
