Subject: [capenews-l] International Criminal Court will now prosecute
environmental crime!

In a major shift of focus, the ICC will now, for the first time, consider
cases of crime committed against the ecosystem. (Link below)

This is a profound, pivotal change in direction for a court that has, up
till now, been concerned exclusively with criminal acts perpetrated by one
or more persons directly against other persons. Now, the intermediary target
-- the ecosystem on which we humans are utterly dependent -- is considered a
subject for protection.

This is a major shift in perspective for the Court, and falls in line with
the pronouncements of the Rio Conference many years ago, and of the actions
of several nations and provinces around the world which have granted the
ecosystem inherent rights, or have made the right to a healthy and diverse
ecosystem a central position in human law.

We appear to be growing up as a species, one halting step at a time.

It's wonderful to see. w
