Hi GREN:

A couple of action alerts to bring to your attention below. One requesting that Ontario oppose the proposed diversion of Great Lakes water by the community of Waukesha, WI; the other is regarding refinancing of the Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative in Canada’s coming federal budget. The Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative provides critical support for work to address algal blooms in Lake Erie.

Would appreciate your support on both, and please circulate far and wide!

Tony

Right now, decision makers are considering whether or not to allow the community of Waukesha, Wisconsin to divert Great Lakes water. However, this diversion proposal does not meet the strict standards we fought so hard for to protect our Great Lakes. It is the first test of an exemption request to the Great Lakes Compact ban on diversions and we need your help to ensure our protections are enforced.

Please act now! <http://act.freshwaterfuture.org/page/speakout/waukesha> The clock is ticking on this critical decision for the future of the Great Lakes. Comments will only be accepted until March 14, 2016.

Canada’s Federal Budget 2016 is set to be released March 22, 2016, which also happens to be World Water Day! Help us make sure this year’s budget addresses one of the most critical water quality issues in the country – harmful algal blooms and dangerously low oxygen levels in Lake Erie.

For the past three years, the federal government has been doing great work to better understand how to fix the problem through the Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative. However, this important program will end in March 2016, unless it receives funding in Budget 2016. Please write to the Ministers of Finance and Environment and Climate Change <http://act.freshwaterfuture.org/page/speakout/great-lakes-nutrient-initiative> so that they know a healthy Lake Erie is a top priority for Canadians.
