Subject: Why we're changing course in Chemical Valley

Five years ago, we helped our clients, Ada Lockridge and Ron Plain of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, launch a lawsuit against the Ontario government and Suncor Energy. The lawsuit challenged the government’s failure to address cumulative, chronic air pollution in Chemical Valley and its secretive way of making decisions about pollution.

Dear Susan,

Five years ago, we helped our clients, Ada Lockridge and Ron Plain of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, <http://www.e-activist.com/ea-action/broadcast.record.message.click.do?ea.url.id=593131&ea.campaigner.email=3%2FxXESPczZg2mEhxG0OcyftBUkTptuQxg0%2BNtx6TmEc=&ea.campaigner.id=ioXFhXURyrWZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> launch a lawsuit against the Ontario government and Suncor Energy. The lawsuit challenged the government’s failure to address cumulative, chronic air pollution in Chemical Valley and its secretive way of making decisions about pollution.

Fast forward to the present, and the landscape has shifted. After years of Ron and Ada’s hard work and our advocacy on their behalf, the Ontario government is finally taking steps to fix some of the problems that led Ada and Ron to take legal action.

That’s why we’ve decided to change course — at least for now — from battling it out in court to working with Ada, Ron, and the Aamjiwnaang community to ensure that Ontario’s new initiatives lead to durable community solutions.

We believe that governments have an obligation to protect people from unsafe levels of pollution. We also believe that every person in Canada has the basic human right to live in a healthy environment — including clean air, safe drinking water, and a stable climate.

Working with Ada and Ron has deepened our commitment to advancing the recognition and protection of environmental rights in Canada. When we first launched this case, few people in Canada had an understanding of what “environmental rights” were. Today, a groundswell of public support has led more than 130 municipalities, representing a third of Canada’s population, to pass declarations in support of environmental rights.

This is remarkable progress.

Now, we look to Ontario to make similarly remarkable progress on the ground in Chemical Valley and other impacted communities. And as always, we will keep a watchful eye to ensure the government delivers the changes that are so desperately needed.
