Subject: New Democrats support real action on the environment
Thank you for getting in touch. Please know that I share your concern for our environment. First, let me say that I share your sense of urgency regarding climate change. It is a vitally important issue and it will take a good deal of effort to get us back on track to do our part as a country and build a more sustainable future. I'm proud of the fact that the NDP has always been a champion of climate action in Parliament. We worked hard – with activists and concerned Canadians across the country – to pass Jack Layton's Climate Change Accountability Act through the House of Commons in 2008. Unfortunately, the bill was killed by an unelected Conservative-dominated Senate with no study or debate. New Democrats have reintroduced the Climate Change Accountability Act (Bill C-619) and, if elected, we will pass it into law. We are the only party to have introduced legislation that would set clear, science-based targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. We are also committed to a clear and accountable plan to meet these targets which would include putting a price on carbon through a cap and trade system that would require emitters to pay for the pollution they create, which will reduce emissions and ramp up investment in renewable energy. As we prepare for upcoming international climate negotiations in Paris at the end of this year, our party has put forward the strongest targets to reduce Canada's emissions. The Conservatives are way off track to meet even their weak targets, and the Liberal Leader hasn't committed to any targets at all - in fact, he's not even prepared to think about targets until after this critical meeting in Paris is over. Canada and other developed countries have an obligation to cut emissions, and to help ensure that developing countries have access to clean technology and financing for adaptation and mitigation of climate change effects. Tackling climate change is a global challenge – but it is also an opportunity to create new green jobs in renewable energy and clean technology. The global market for clean technology is expected to reach $3 trillion by 2020, but Canada is currently capturing just one percent of this massive opportunity. An NDP government will eliminate subsidies to the fossil-fuel industry and invest in clean energy instead. We will work with businesses, and with communities to develop our incredible endowment of renewable energy resources to reduce our emissions, increase our energy security, and create tens of thousands of good green jobs. We will also invest in using energy better by supporting energy efficiency retrofits that will bring down household costs while reducing demand for power. New Democrats understand the need to move away from our reliance on fossil fuels and we have a vision for development that promotes economic growth and job creation, hand in hand with social and environmental sustainability. As we work to build a green economy, we also accept that non-renewable resources will continue to form a part of our energy mix in the short term. We therefore must improve the oversight and regulation of these resources to mitigate environmental impacts and ensure energy projects are environmentally sustainable before they proceed. The Conservatives have systematically dismantled environmental protections, arbitrarily limited the National Energy Board's reviews and severely restricted public input. They have run roughshod over or entirely dismantled laws to protect endangered species, to protect our lakes and rivers, and to protect fish and their habitat. An NDP government will rebuild, renew and strengthen the environmental assessment regime to ensure that the public interest and our environment come first. A thorough and credible review process must include measuring the climate change impacts associated with proposed projects. We will ensure that review processes are open to full participation by all Canadians and that we respect and honor our legal duty to consult and accommodate First Nations. The urgent need for real action to combat climate change and to transition towards renewable energy is clear – what is required is political will. New Democrats are committed to making Canada a responsible partner in the global fight against climate change – and a leader in the development of a sustainable economy here at home. We must ensure that Canada's future is green and sustainable, with jobs, a healthy environment for generations to come. Together we can make this change – I hope you'll join us.
